Turbo housing shenanigans

Hey everyone. I am trying to swap out my stock 21cm housing for an 18cm we have laying around. Only problem is after removing the 4 bolts and associated clamps, the housing will not come off. I've hit it with penetrating oil, let it sit overnight. According to the holset manual online, all I have to do it tap it with a "soft hammer" and that sucker should fall right off. Well, I've been tap tap tapping and this thing won't budge. Any tricks I should know about? Thanks.

Put some more penetrating oil and try again tomorrow. You want to hit it in a radial motion as if you are trying to turn it, not axially as if you are pounding it out.

AND don't be afraid to hit it !!!

Mine wouldn't budge after 3 days of soaking and using a 3 lb sledge on it.

I took it over to Grand Ledge - about 90 mi away - and the guy at the counter said I was babying it. He called out one of the mechs and when I heard the banging in the shop I thought I'd end up with pieces.....You can't even see where the housing was hit.

They even hit it with a wire wheel. the housing slid like it had lube on the joint. Made clocking lots easier.......

Put it back together with some anti-seize and never worry about that again. :tu:

Yeah, I put anti seize on just about everything anymore. I'll get out the hand sledge and have a go at it tonight. Thanks.1
