P-Pump conversion........

What is needed to do a P-Pump conversion?
Did some searching and can only find some things so I would like to make a list....
thanks

you will need a pump, timing cover, timing gear (nut and washer also). you will need new fuel and return lines (the old banjos are too small for the new lines) you will need the banjo fitting for the pump inlet (or any alternative way to get fuel to the pump). you will also need an overflow valve, throttle linkage, a new throttle cable, injector lines, injector or at least new bodies. support bar for the p pump. and you will need an oil feed line as well to the p pump;. i think the hardest thing to find for me was the T in the side of the block that sends oil to both the vacuum pump and the injector pump, since the 1st gens only have an oil line to the vacuum pump. i think thats pretty much it, if im forgetting anything let me know

so there is no new cam, gear housing, gears? nothing like that?

Just wanted to bump this thread up incase anyone else has any additional info.

I'm doing this exact thing but I have a complete '96 engine with a holy block so I want to use the '93 engine but swap everything from the '96 onto it. Everything i've read says this is just a bolt on procedure, but just wanted to make sure that all the parts from the newer engine will bolt to the '93 block.

Thanks for the info tltruckparts, Just want to make sure that I'm not going to have any big surprises when I rip into this:rocking:

From what I understand, which is limited, the block was exactly the same until they went to the 24V. So, you should have no worries... famous last words.

06cumminz 08-28-2010 08:55 PM

no bog surprises, tltruckparts listed everything i think, if you do have the extra money its not a bad idea to get an after market cam since your going through all the work.

JDcummins 08-28-2010 10:40 PM

Why don't you just put that 96 motor in why tear apart a good thing just my opinion I want a 24v in mine does any body know if someone has one in there rig I mean why go threw all that work to take parts off and put them on something else

jpfiero 08-28-2010 11:19 PM

Thanks for the confirmation guys:c: I just finished swapping the gear case and ppump onto my '93 block and it all fit perfectly:tu:

It is a lot of work:argh:, so it probably would be better to just grab a ppumped motor and drop it in, but I got my '93 engine for less than half the price of what a '94-'98.5 engine would cost me and it looks like new inside:jump::yeah: now I just need to find out if the '93 head will work with the '96 accessories.

KD93 08-30-2010 07:12 AM

Nice!! :jump: Glad you got it strapped on. Time for pics and numbers! :rocking:

It will.
It interchanges from '91.5 through early '98.

Guys, keep in mind, there's 2 different set-ups for the rear pump support, '94-'95 and '96-'98.
The early one uses a thick, cast 'T' block on the pump, the later one is stamped steel.
I don't think they will interchange.

Mark.

I think the hole in the block might affect the reliability :c:

I hope you are considering assembling some kits, because that might be my next expensive move...

big bad diesel 416 09-05-2010 03:28 PM

lol thats 50% of the reason for this post

mkriebs 09-05-2010 06:13 PM

Hmmmmm, lol. We can throw that in my twins kit :rocking:

DieselSharker 09-05-2010 07:00 PM

You could call Nick since he's done it before and is doing it right now. Shouldn't you already know this anyway?

big bad diesel 416 09-05-2010 07:19 PM

I have never done a p-pump swap but I know the 94-98 and the 89-93 like the nob on the back of my head so I know whats different and all but I have my list I just making sure and thats a good idea Chris I need to call and order some stuff from him anyway lol

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that the 1st gen 12v has different piston bowls and a different nozzle on the injectors (different spray pattern). Not sure what I'm going to do about that, it was a nasty little surprise:argh:.

The first gen injectors will not attach to the 2nd gen fuel lines(different thread), also the non. I/C trucks have 9mm injector nozzles vs. 7mm from '91.5 on.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I looked at the injectors and noticed that the injectors installed in the '93 ve pumped engine have much thicker copper washers than the injectors in the '96 ppumped engine. So that means the ppumped engine had the injectors protruding farther into the combustion chamber.

I checked out cummins quickserve(my brother works for cummins) and according to the online manual all 7mm injectors have the same nozzles. I think this means the reason that the pistons are different is because of the different injector protrusion. I'm not sure about the higher fuel pressure from the ppump, not sure how much that would affect the spray pattern.

What injectors do you guys use in your ppump swaps? and how thick are the copper washers you put in?

tltruckparts 09-06-2010 11:44 PM

i used the p pump injectors i got from sdx as well as the p pump fuel lines with the copper washers from sdx that they supplied as well. i dont remember how thick they were to be exact though.

as far as the complexity of the swap, mine was done in a day (with the exception of having to wait a few days for the injectors to come in). it was a great upgrade, the truck is 10 times more drivable now it is just much more street friendly

jpfiero 09-07-2010 07:18 AM

Do you remember if the washers are about 1/8" thick or less than 1/16"? Did SDX build the injectors specifically for a ppump swaped engine or are they just off the shelf ppump injectors?

Thanks

Here is a problem I ran into on my swap:

https://www.dieselbombers.com/attach...1&d=1285902047

I had to grind out a piece of the head to clear, simple fix but maybe it will save someone some time:tu:

The engine runs great, I'm using the factory ppump injectors with the thicker copper injector washers that came in the gasket set from cummins:jump::rocking:

big bad diesel 416 09-30-2010 10:40 PM

Sweet man hows it run?

cummins_guy 10-01-2010 07:32 AM

Did that P-Pump come off of a 8.3l?

jpfiero 10-01-2010 08:46 AM

Truck seems to run great:jump::tu:.

Why do you ask if the pumps off of an 8.3l? This pump was on the truck when I bought it, but it has been rebuilt or replaced with a rebuilt unit at some point so I don't know:humm:.

I looked at the old head that was on my '96 block and it has a notch cast into it, that seems to be the only real difference between a '96 head and a '93 head.

cummins_guy 10-02-2010 12:33 PM

8.3 uses two (2) types of pumps p3000 and the p7100, there both have the oil feed on the back side like that, just curios

ford used 6C motors and the pump just looked like the one I have in my shop.

jpfiero 10-02-2010 01:26 PM

On my pump the fitting that I had to notch for is the fuel return line, or are you talking about the other fitting down lower in between the pump and block?
