steering headache
 

I have a 1992 cummins 4x4... currently the truck is unsafe to drive I have checked and replaced the steering linkage and ball joints, the brakes are not dragging wheel bearings are good rotated tires and just installed a new steering gear and my problem is not fixed.... its a fight to keep the truck in the lane going down the road the damn thing is becoming a money pit I dumb founded at this point. And I was wonder has anyone experienced steering column issues with this truck the showed the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Does the 92 Dodges have a track bar ... It runs from the front Diff to the frame, usually a front crossmember area.... This is a real common problem on Dodges

there is no track bar on a 92. check the steering coupler between the colum and tha box they get sloppy and can be rebuilt or replaced with a better shaft made by borgeson. i rebuilt my coupler and replaced my steering gear and it fixed all my steering issues other than the piss poor right hand turning.

it says that steering box brace is for 94 and up am i missing something? will it work on a 1st gen?

One of the problems with my steering was the rivets in the brackets that the leaf springs attach onto the frame with were moving ever so slightly it was like you wouldn't drive it you'd "herd" it down the road, until I welded the brackets to the frame now I can go over 40mph safely on the dirt roads and I can keep it in one lane going down the road (Until I hit those "ruts" caused by the big-rigs on the roads)

my truck would shake real bad and had a lot play i had to put a drag link bar on and make a washer to tighten up my steering knuckle and that helped alot it still drove like a dodge

I'd check the coupler, the front spring eye bolt mounts and look for cracks in the frame around the steering box. Any of those things alone or in combination will cause the symptoms you describe.
I'm not sure what this means. Any truck will handle and steer poorly when it is not properly maintained and coming apart due to abuse and neglect. Maybe this just means typical Dodge owners don't know how to take care of their vehicles?

I have two Dodge pickups, a 91 and an 07, both drive laser straight with no steering or handling issues whatsoever. The D60s in the 1st Gens are so stout they don't even need a stabilizer with stock sized tires and the kingpins will last forever if they get greased once in awhile.
