Dana 70? or Dana70-HD
what's the difference? besides $300 more for gears?
I need to put gears in mine since the pinion stripped on me :ouch: is there a way to tell the difference? believe the build tag on the truck just lists as a 70. it's a 93 w350 dually rear. |
all dana axles have the size on the bottom right corner wedge on the pumpkin. it should say d70 on it. if its an hd 70 i believe itll say d70hd but i could be wrong. what size are your axle tubes

beats me...
I can poul them tomorrow. looked at summit website and they had gears in stock so I drove over there to buy them and what the website didn't mention was they were in stock in the warehouse in az :( can't get them here till next week.. and I need this thing on the road 2 days ago. going to look for a whole rear this sunday when I have time. |
the difference is the hd uses a larger inner pinion bearing. the case is different it is made narrower because it uses larger side bearings like a 80. as far as the ring and pinion i do believe that they are the same. if you have it apart and the side bearings and races are 3 series its just a 70. if they are 4 series then its an hd70.

if not use house paint when you start to shim it up to see how far the gears are meshing
just dab some house paint on the ring gear and roll it around youll see if its to much or not enough also make sure to replace the crush washer and put the correct preload on the pinnion bearings |
A good gearhead doesn't need a dial indicator to "feel" the right backlash, either.
