Only 2nd gear

I have a 92 3/4 ton with a 518 trans. I stopped at a stoplight and the truck only has 2nd gear going forward, reverse works fine. The fluid don't smell burnt. I'm going to drop the pan and change the filter but, could the shift seliniod be bad? I am also check for error codes in the ECM. Thanks

i dont think youll get any codes im pretty sure the trans isnt computerized enough to throw one.

what is the make and model? if it wont shift into any other gear except 2nd gear and reverese then i would check the 12v power going to the trans computer maybe 2nd is it's default gear

It's a 92 dodge 4X2. Where would the trans computer be at. or is it the 2 wires going into the side of the trans, not the backup switch.

make sure you dont use a test light. only a digital multi meter will do for computerized systems. make sure you have ground as well.

The tranny should work fine in 1st 2nd and 3rd with no 12v to it. It just wont have OD.

So am I looking at the possibility of it being the shifter solenoid?

i would say your looking at a rebuilt transmission most likely

I downloaded the ATSG service manual from a different thread and it said that 1-3 gears are hydraulically controled and overdrive is controled by the solenoid.
