Injector pump leak - specific question

Hey all, I'm new here. Looks like a good place for info.

I have a VE pump on a 4BT. It appears that an oring is leaking on the 1" thick block just behind the plate where the injector lines screw in. I will need to remove the 1" thick plate to replace the oring.

Question, Can I remove and reinstall this with it on the engine? Pics I have seen show it sitting up right, but was told by someone that it can be done with it on the engine.

It is cold and I am running short on time so I'd like to do it on the engine.

Not new to working on engines by 30+ years so if it can be done I can do it. I just can't find anyone personally that can say they did it and there is a trick to it or no problem, etc,...

Thanks in advance.

If you are thinking of what I think you are (a pic would help) You should be able to do it, pulling the pump is not real hard though... Then you can do it in the warmth.

The 1" thick piece that the injection lines attach to is the "head". There is a big O-ring in between the head and the rest of the injection pump.

It's easiest to pull the pump to do that seal.

Well, hell

I guess I will pull it and just replace everything I can get to. I have the full seal kit. It just seems the wind is always blowing in Texas and it is cold. Tho not like the north east right now.

But I don't have a gasket for the front plate. I'll assume I can make one from gasket material unless someone says different.

Been reading - it looks like the front cover doesn't have to be removed unless I drop things in there...

yeah you don't have to take it off just remember to pin the pump, so it doesn't turn while you work on it.

This is a three video deal on how to do the pump removal on the first gen, should be a good watch to make sure you know what to look for. That cold can really get ya frustrated and throw your mind off track.:tu:

Again, this is only video 1 of 3. So slick on it so it takes you to youtube and it will show the remaining 2 videos.

Thanks for the info - time to suit up. It made it up to 35 deg

Wasn't too bad. Cold this morning and warmed up to 45. Had to shed clothes.

You definitely have to pull pump to do that. Pulling the pump wasn't near as bad as I imagined. I didn't even think of trying for top dead, just put the keyway up and yanked it. Maybe if you are into S&M you might try it on the engine.

No leaks now. Cranked right up after bleeding air.
