wastegate question

well i just got done putthow in my hx40 on today finally and i have a question.

how necesarry is the waste? should i just wire it shut or open whatever way it goes, or should i need to adjust it? ive never worked on a wastegate before so i dont really know what to do with it. i want to be able to get good boost out of it. by the way its an 18cm housing

The purpose of the wategate is to prevent your over-speeding and grenading the turbo. In order to set it correctly, you need to know the highest pressure within the turbo's MAP that can be produced safely without superheating the air in the process. Check with your turbo's manufacturer. ;)

so i think it said 60lbs/min IIRC? does that mean it safe to psi? cause thats alot of boost i dont think ill even be at 40. but if its capable of withstanding that would i be ok g the wastegate all the way open?

Lil Red Express 01-12-2010 07:35 PM

Thats just the volume not boost press.

can someone tell me what is an acceptable boost pressure for my hx40? and how i need to adjust the wastegate to hit that pressure

it is my understanding the wheel on a 40 is big enough that there is a risk of braking the shaft if u go much over 40 psi. ive got pods and a wickedly tuned pump and a 40 with a 14cm non wastegate housing and i only do like 35 psi. i seriously doubt ud ever have any trouble with that big a housing and no gate.

thats kind of what i thought as well, just wanted second opinions

Not sure how many lbs/min I'm actually flowing but I can easily over 55 psi boost with my setup.
I HAD my gate disconnected when I first installed my HX40 with a 17cm3 housing and I connected it REAL quick !!
Now I'm limiting at 47 psi which I do not hit very often. I just don't trust stock head bolts with almost 340K on them.
