Getrag woes...

I currently have a Getrag 360 in my Fummins from my donor '90 Dodge W250 and it has a problem...

The transmission shifts smooth as can be, has always been overfilled and is clean as a virgins honey pot on the inside....however...whenever I go to downshift out of 5th gear, the shifter seems to slide out of the rails and I'm lost in no mans land, stuck in 5th gear, until I fish it back into the rails and try downshifting again. It only does it in 5th and only on the downshift. The stick does seem to wander waaaaaaaaay away from me when I shift into 5th...like over in the passengers lap. I was wondering if this is a problem with sloppy shift rails and a worn out top cover or if I have deeper issues. I've taken the lid off and everything "looks" and "feels" okay with the gear assembly itself, but the lid is a little worse for wear I'm afraid.

Does anyone have any suggestions....other than swap in an NV4500/5600?

Thanks!

~Jeremy

my friend zachs 91 does that..... our tranny guy says he can fix it with a bit of welding and a die grinnder but i dont know to what..... i would guess he means to the pivot end of the shifter but i may be wrong.

my 5 speed did the exact same thing, and just this last week it actually got jammed and wouldnt come out of gear period. i had it checked out today after removing the shift tower and the rails are all jacked up, so now i need a new shift tower. hopefully yours doesnt follow the same route mine did

mine got stuck in 5th gear. made a sound too. finaly got it to workin and now the thing wants to pop out of gear all the time in low gears. trans. guy at a shop said sounded like shift forks. heck idk. i wish it was fixed though

good luck man. mine started that crap and after hauling a trailer with 13 heiers it decided not to go into any gear. luckly i had a second gen trany sittin atound around ready to replace it. the shop wanted 1700 to fix the getrag.

Anyone have any leads on a new top cover? Or have any advice in "fixing" one?

I hear all they do on a rebuild is bore the rail guides out and replace them with inserts and such to tighten everything up, maybe insert new roll pins and speedy-sleeves where needed, but I wasn't sure if those were available parts of custom fabbed...? :humm:

What about the "welding" fix? Anyone have any ideas on that? Anything to keep the old rag alive until I can look into something else...
