4x4

I have this strange noise when i put my truck into 4 wheel drive. It almost sounds like a click or a crunch. It doesnt sound like heavy metal contact but rather something small and soft like a spring. It almost sounds as if a spring is binding up somewhere. I have replaced the right side hub and repacked and redone all axle seals also. The truck still runs like a tank in the snow though. Anyone have any ideas?

check the linkage, I believe there is a spring in there and it might be binding

Sorry forgot to mention i also get a slight death shake. I only feel it in 4x4 and when im coasting or slightly on the pedal. if i get hard into it then it goes away. Front end looked good when i tore it apart and put a new tie rod ends on.

how do all the u-joints look? with a wobble I would have to say one is about to go!

could also be a hub not fully engaging or something along those lines

TTipsword 11-17-2009 12:00 PM

u-joints look good. Like my Signaturs says, i think the diesel god just hates me.

another thing you could check for is play in the front output for the transfer case, might be wobbly. that or hubs and wheel bearings

input into the T-case as in up-down, side-side movemnet or in-out movment?

Budgreen 11-17-2009 02:34 PM

an excess of either would be bad.

could possibly push the axle around if it's on a really oblong rotation... not 100% sure so I'm throwing ideas out.

well i looked at my front drive shaft this morning again. Again it felt solid until i put my hand on the double u-joint on the t-case side. got about a half inch of movement from side to side ha ha.:argh:

Budgreen 11-18-2009 02:22 PM

Yikes! thats almost as bad as mine.

my front output on the t-case is toast.. I think it moves at least an inch in any direction, just picked up parts the other day to work on it.

glad it will be a relatively cheap fix for you
