no start

hey everyone my truck has been running great for the last couple months as ive been working on my project. i just got my cummins conversion mounts from autoworld for the ac compressor and alternator. this was the last thing i had to do to get my truck driveable.

well after i got everything on, now the truck wont start. it sputters like it wants to go but it just wont start. i know you can tighten belts too much, but it still uses the factory tensioner with the serpentine so there is no tighten the belts

anyone got any ideas?

re-prime the fuel system

wildbill 11-02-2009 07:01 PM

Might still be a little air in the fuel system, or the fuel shut off rod isn't kicking on all the way.

tltruckparts 11-02-2009 07:04 PM

i never disconnected any fuel lines though so how would air randomly get in there? and i have an electric pump not the mechanical pump so it primes itself.

all i did was just put on the belts i didnt unhook or disconnect as single thing

TTipsword 11-02-2009 07:51 PM

gotta be a fuel problem somewhere. Make sure that electric pump has got power to it.

tltruckparts 11-02-2009 07:57 PM

it does and its pumping. i have fuel still coming. do you think possibly the fuel pump isnt giving enough fuel to run it with the load on it. if i disconnect the belts it starts right up

muskrat 11-02-2009 08:07 PM

:humm: Might have to round up a fuel preasure gauge.

tltruckparts 11-02-2009 08:09 PM

i got one under the truck i just cant look at it while cranking at the same time. what do i need at a bare minimum to run the truck

muskrat 11-02-2009 08:44 PM

The P7100 should be putting out 18 -24 psi @ idle.

tltruckparts 11-02-2009 08:55 PM

i thought the injection pump only needs 3 psi to run and the pumps arent even supposed to handle over something like 15 psi

muskrat 11-02-2009 09:01 PM

sorry, what pump are you running?

tltruckparts 11-02-2009 09:02 PM

just the stock 93 rotary pump. i dont know the exact model number

muskrat 11-02-2009 09:04 PM

AH... Yeah like 4 -7 psi.

How does it run without the belt? Thats kinda strange

stillcummin 11-03-2009 05:27 AM

MAYBE A FAILED BEARING ANY STRANGE NOISE?:humm:

tltruckparts 11-03-2009 02:55 PM

well i got it started. there was just enough air in the injector lines to make it not start with the load of the belt on it. but now i got it running again its blowing a ton of white smoke out of the exhaust. it happens during idle or rev as well. and it is running rough and after about 10 seconds of idle or so itll die but then it fires right back up again. is this just a sign of air still in the system?

muskrat 11-03-2009 03:46 PM

Yes, there is probably more air in the lines.

tltruckparts 11-03-2009 03:57 PM

whats the easiest way to clear the air. just let it run or do i need to keep cracking the injectors

RSWORDS 11-03-2009 04:05 PM

crack the injector lines. One at a time

muskrat 11-03-2009 04:05 PM

Try cracking injectors until you get a steady flow of fuel starting furthest injector from the pump and work toward the pump. when I started messing with my pump, I ended up with a butt-load of air in my system and it ran the same way. I just had to bleed it all out and then it ran fine. How'd so much air get in? Any leaks?

tltruckparts 11-03-2009 04:53 PM

i dont know about any leaks but i just went through and tightened every hose clamp on the whole truck for the fuel system and now it wont start at all and im confused. i cracked all the lines open one at a time and i get fuel to each of em and it still wont start at all. i checked all my connections to the pump and all and it appears fine including the shut off solenoid. so now im just confused as can be it doesnt even sputter it sounds like it isnt pumping at all, but yet fuel is coming from all the lines:argh:

i guess today just isnt my day considering out of nowhere my fan decided to go crazy today and blow straight through my radiator.

muskrat 11-03-2009 05:29 PM

:argh: Brutal, man. It was running fine until you did the alternator and a/c compressor? That's all you did recently? Timing issues can cause problems like that also a bad injector or low engine compression, but if it's been running fine without dicking with it, I have no idea...weird. What was the fuel preasure gauge showing? Fuel filter clogged? Man, now this is starting to confuse me too.

cumminskid92 11-03-2009 06:14 PM

maybe your screen in the fuel tank is clogged up. mine did the same thing as what yours is doing and that was my problem.

tltruckparts 11-03-2009 06:40 PM

i checked the timing on the pump and its still at an eighth advanced. its run a little rough since ive got it in the truck but i havent ever had a chance to fine tune it as i was also building the suspension and 4wd and everything else around it in the chevy and since i didnt have an alt or ac compressor or any belts i didnt want to overheat it. i just got done with all that and now im onto the motor. its confusing because it has run all the time and now it just randomly wont start. starts to get a little frustrating. i think im just going to call it a night and hit it tomorrow. maybe all it needs is a nights rest and not being frustrated with it

muskrat 11-03-2009 06:50 PM

Good call, bud. Go have you a cold one.:c:

Gunmetal 11-07-2009 09:11 PM

Does the prime handle have any resistance on it once the truck has been sitting?
If so.. it is losing prime.

tltruckparts 11-07-2009 09:12 PM

its the injection pump and one of the injectors is stuck open. new pump and injectors on the way this week
