transmission leak?
 

hello again everyone, on the back of my transmission (46rh) where it connects to my transfer case, i have fluid leaking out of the meeting of two. i know i need a new gasket inbetween them, but i also know that there should be any fluid inbetween them in the first place. so what would be leaking that would cause transmission fluid to enter that area? thanks

I would think the seal around teh output shaft on teh tranny would be your problem

thats kind of what i was figuring as well, but i didnt know of there was a common cause of this or something that alot of people have problems with. i have read that the 518 and 46rh is the same transmission just a different name is this true? and i have also heard that 93 was a first year of a lockup converter is this true as well? because mine is a 93

the gasket that joins the two housings isnt necessary; if my thinking is correct theres a notch either cut or casted into the flange that acts as a weep hole to let you know when the out put shaft seal is on its way out. so i'm inclinded to say it is infact the seal

wonderful that means i get to pull out the np205 yet again:argh: anyone got any good tips on removing these, at least the lifting portion its heavier than all get out!

hah! the 205 is a heavy bastard... when i dropped the 727 out of the truck and tried putting it back in it kept sliding off the transmission jack. once under the truck where i had to shove the jack back under the trans while pushing it up so i didnt rip my cooler lines out, and then like 3 er 4 times out on the shop floor, one of which my foot was just about ran over by the trans jack :edit: so i feel your pain since the ratchet strap wasnt doin the trick two C clamps sure as hell did. no more trans slide :U:

consider yourself lucky you have a trans jack! i have to do it by hand with a little help of a jack but that doesnt work very well it just falls off. its a pain

done it with the 47rh and a floor jack... fun when your on a creeper and you have to pull the trans back and down by yourself... ya look like a monkey trying to :edit: a football when your shucking back and forwarth in a jerking motion on a creeper :argh: so feel your pain; i actually went up to my transmission guy and he let me borrow his floor trans jack

its kind of an ignorant job, but so far the best way ive found to get one of these up is to jack the truck up good and high, then slide the case under it, just off to the side of where you want it, then you gotta roll in from the other side, and lay on your back directly under where its goin, push the light side(as if there is one eh lol) of the case up and rest it on your side when your facing towards it, then lay back down flat and pull it up onto your chest as you go, once its there, its just lift it up and jam it on, they come down HARD though, so dont drop it. As soon as its up there, get the heck out from underneath it, and get a bolt on so you dont have to do it again.

its good practice to have someone else there incase it goes bad on ya, but make sure its not your wife, if she see's you doing it this way she's gonna be pissed:U:
