91 Cummins Upgrade Advice

I need to find some good upgrades that aren't to much for the truck to handle and aren't going to break anything:U:

NadirPoint 10-08-2009 10:33 AM

366 gov spring and turn the fuel cone to the deep side. That'll keep you happy for awhile at next to no cost, pocketbook, parts or risk-wise.

Do what NidirPoint said and also get yourself a set of guages (EGT, Fuel Pressure, Boost) and then mess with the full power screw and bump the timing. It will be like a totally different truck.

totally different truck is an understatement... gauges are a must for sure; the 366 spring and fuel cone alone will keep ya smiling, once you hit the full power screw stage just dont get too carried away if there are any hills around. my pyro is post turbo and i hit a long 6-8% grade at WOT 60 mph it started to climb past 900 so realistically it was probably cooking around 11-1200* backed it down to 50 and just cruised; point is w/o gauges i probably would have melted a piston at WOT and 30+ psi of boost you dont have a whole lot of smoke that is associated with hot cylinder temps

muskrat 10-08-2009 05:11 PM

X2 Gauges first. I had to back off my full fuel screw cause I have a 7% grade to and from work and if it wern't for the pyro, I'd go 1300* easy. They'll save your ass. Also, pop the little cap off the center of the top of your pump and break the lock nut loose and turn the screw in ( I went flush w/ the nut) and you'll get some smoke. There's lot's of great threads on this site on exactly how to do just about everything you'll need to do. Just look around. Have fun, bud.:hi:

Yep, gauges definitely won't be too much for the truck to handle or break anything. :w2:

idk nadir; it always seems soon as you get gauges and know what's going on with the truck that's when stuff starts to break... and hence the phrase "ignorance is bliss; then you melt a hole in your piston :edit::edit::edit:" :ha:

Ross59 10-14-2009 12:47 PM

so if i do this stuff will i have to worry about melting pistons or making a big mistake ill regret

muskrat 10-14-2009 03:04 PM

No melting, dude. The 3200 gov spring only allows your truck to make power up to 3200 rpm. So, when you're cruising down the highway and you need to pass someone, you wont have to stand on the pedal, instead your truck will accelerate with ease. Plus you will notice better throttle response just toolng around town. However, turning the full fuel screw in too far will indeed raise your egts alot, potentialy melting a piston. As long as you only turn it in a full turn or so you'll be fine. Also pay close attention while you disassemble your pump, so you get the indexing of your throttle lever correct when you put it back together. If you don't mark the position correctley and put it together in the wrong position, the motor will either not start, barely start and run like crap, or if you index too far advanced you will experience runaway, which will potentaly blow up your motor. But if you have a helper around when you finish puting the pump back together, have them start the truck while you stand ready at the turbo fresh air intake (remove the tube frome the turbo) and have a clean chunk of 2x6 to cover the turbo air intake. That will starve the motor of air and it will shut off. Basicly the throttle index has to be in the "sweet spot" to run right. Just follow the correct steps and you'll be just fine. Also, keep asking questions on here and we'll all get ya thru it.:c:

you can also get an M&H fuel pin from us if, we have five different profiles to choose from.

RSWORDS 10-15-2009 10:36 AM

Yeah teh M&H pins are a nice tuning tool!

absolutely! gotta love having choices... grinding your own stocker only goes so far... especially when you have to add a little extra metal and the welder gets away from ya; having a two piece fuel pin doesnt work well at all.
