found a 1st gen, is it worth it?

My dad has a buddy that recently has had a 1st gen come into his possession and wants to sell it. It's a '91 250 2wd auto with a cummins. The odo shows just shy of 135000 miles. The guy says that the IP is dead, but at 135k the shutoff solenoid seems more likely to me. The body is freakishly straight with the typical worn out paint. The seat hasn't begun to wear yet and doesn't show any signs of age. We can't test any of the other systems in the truck like the electrical system either because the batteries are missing. He's asking $1200 for the truck as is, reckon its worth it?

sounds like a good deal to me, especially if it only has 135k on it, mines a 94 with 300k :U:

stkdram55 10-03-2009 11:57 PM

shoot for 1200, if it dont work out you can part the truck out and probably make more then that

What is it doing that he thinks the IP is dead?

zjohnsonua 10-04-2009 03:42 PM

shoot the motor is worth that the truck is just a plus

could be alot of things. Could be as simple as the hot wire off the shut down solinoid is missing. If its in good shape I would say snag it.

That's definitely worth it for $1,200, what's the worst case scenario? Get a rebuilt IP for about a grand and you're into it $2,200 for a good truck with a fresh pump and almost new engine!!

That really is nothing for miles, I just tore down a 350k mile cummins, too hot of EGT cooked the #5 piston and took out the bearings, the other five pistons looked absolutely perfect.

good call, forgot about the head gasket. That's a pretty reasonable fix, too, especially if the head doesn't need to be planed. I did my head gasket and got studs ($300 for studs is cheap assurance!!) at about 290-300k miles but I waited until the gasket blew :argh:

I was just saying 300 for the studs, nothing for the head gasket or anything else; I just checked the invoice, it was actually 350 for the ARP's I just bought last week for the '00 I'm working on, they're brand new. my bad.
