not cummins dodge diesel

Does anyone know about the mitsubishi diesel powered dodge truck of the 70's? Are they any good? i found one for $1200 would it be worth it?

MotorOilMcCall 04-02-2009 07:12 PM

Its a Ram 50... If you're looking for a truck thats as useful as a Subaru Brat, then go for it... Otherwise, its worthless.

Dodge offered one in '78 or '79 in the full size trucks. It was pretty dependable, not a lot of power and I have no idea how easy it would be to get parts for. I think they were even turbocharged so you may be able to wring some more power out of them.

I'd say it's worth the money if it's remotely road worthy.

the guy in the posting said its a 3/4 ton truck.

also he said all it needed was a battery.

Johnny Cetane 04-02-2009 07:25 PM

Bring a battery and prove it. Take it for a drive. Like I said, not sure about parts availability.

RSWORDS 04-02-2009 07:32 PM

Yeah Johnny nailed it. Reliable trucks, not very powerful and not sure how easy it would be to find parts.

any possible ideas on how to increase power? it doesnt have a turbo so how hard would it be to put one on?

MotorOilMcCall 04-02-2009 08:20 PM

Oh... I figured it was the Ram 50, the Mitsu diesel is pretty rare. If it doesn't have a turbo it's really tough to put one on and tune it well. The pump probably won't flow enough to support a turbo, and you'll have a real hard time modulating fuel and boost. Since the pump doesn't already have a way to add fuel when boost rises, you'll have a hard time adding something that would do it.

you biggest problem may not be enough fuel but its probly indirect injected and high compression like 19.0 to 22.1 which means it won't handle much boost IDK but it would be a pretty sweet rig just to cruze not to hot rod

a friend of mine has one setting at his house, it runs and drives just needs ALOT of work.......very interesting trucks if someone had the time and knowledge to rebuild one......if i could i would definately buy one........his is a 3/4 ton, 4 speed, 2wd truck.....
