If this is something you have never done to your truck you need to take half a day and do it. Your truck will thank you with better milage, more power, and quicker responce.
ENJOY!! B Series Valve Adjustment |
half a day, damn you guys are slow it shouldnt take more than 30 minutes from time to take the valve covers off to putting them back on, but it does make the truck run a tad bit better

I have a 1989 1 ton 5.9 and am having trouble finding TDC for my valve adjustment. At what point is it at TDC without removing an injector, and where are or is the mark on the pump? Is it better just to wait until you see the Num 1 valve closed (push rod up, valve spring compressed)? Should I search for the mark some where on the pump?:argh::argh:
|
bottom line is............if there is slack in the vlave train and it wiggles then you can adjust it................dont need to get over worried about TDC

very good post thanks bobby this will help some newbs

what whit said is technically correct; but it can make adjusting things abit dragged out. if you get #6 into valve over lap #1 will be TDC and no injector removal is necessary' then you can go down the line and adjust specific intake and exhaust valves; rotate the engine 360* and you should be set at TDC #6 and then you can adjust the valves you didnt adjust the first time around. to find valve over lap intake valve needs to go down and up; valve train will stay stationary for 180* then the exhaust valve will start to move... rotate the engine the last 90* slowly. the exhaust valve will begin to close once the intake JUST starts to open; your in "valve overlap" and that cylinders companion will be TDC compression stroke with lash in both valves. someone will prorbably pop in and tell ya which valves you can adjust at this point as i dont know them off the top of my head
|
With the engine in this position, adjust the intake valves of cylinders 1, 2 & 4 and adjust the exhaust valves on #1, 3 & 5. then rotate the motor and do the exhaust valves of cylinders 1, 2 & 4 and adjust the intake valves on #1, 3 & 5.
