1st/2nd gen lugs and wheels

I kept the black rock crawler steel wheels that I got for the 96 I used to have. I've recently put them on my '93 when I swapped a 2nd gen Dana 70 in after my ring/pinion started knocking each other's teeth out. My stock wheels wouldn't fit the larger 2nd gen axle(wheel studs/lugs).

My front wheels are only centered by the lug nuts and I'm not real excited about that since the 1st gen lugs are smaller. I'm about to replace my front rotors and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do about putting larger lugs on there that you guys know of. Or if I should just try to get two rock crawlers for the 1st gen size.

the 1st gen and 2nd gen have the same 8 on 6.5" lug pattern; the 1st have a 4.75" bore and are lug centered. 2nd have a 4.78" bore and are hub centered. The only thing that worries me is the 2nd gen lugs are larger, so the 1st gen acorn nuts may not seat 100% of the force against the wheel and may bottom out a little.

please don't confuse "acorn nuts" with that "non-partisan" voter registration scam that's getting funded by the bailout package after showing such large 'losses' not too long after contributing to candidates of one party line.

You can upgrade to 9/16" or 5/8" studs on teh 1st gen. What size are the studs on the rear axle?

greasemonkey 07-04-2009 04:57 PM

I'm back on this again. the studs on the rear axle are 9/16" since it's from a 2nd gen. the front axle on my '93 has the 1/2" studs. by the looks of how big the splined section of these 1/2" studs are, I should be able to get the same thing with a 9/16" thread, I assume that's what you're talking about.

anyone happen to have a PN for the right 9/16's stud? or is it just the stock stud for a 2nd gen?

no, the 2nd gen apparently is not the same other than the threaded portion. according to napa, dimensions as follows:

2nd gen 9/16" wheel stud:
Item#: BK 6414115
Thread Size:9/16" - 18
Overall Length:2.58"
Knurl Diameter:.619"
Shoulder Length:1"
Head Marking:419

1st gen 1/2" wheel stud
Item#: BK 6413119
Thread Size:1/2" - 20
Overall Length:2.343" (2 11/32)
Knurl Diameter:.651"
Shoulder Length:15/16"
Head Marking:363

ooh, found it! I think this only applies to late 1st gens but the napa # wheel stud to change a first gen to 9/16" studs is 6412794:
Thread Size : 9/16"-18
Overall Length : 2.531 (17/32)
Knurl Dia. : .65"
Shoulder Length : 15/16"
