i'm taking a stabb in the dark here but what's your fuel pressure? does the rotary pump have an overfolw valve like a p-pumed motor? maybe a bad lift pump? maybe air in the lines...... smoke when it does it? or no smoke?

2001shrtbedcummins 05-14-2007 10:09 PM

no smoke really when it does it just black smoke cuz I floor it to try to right it. I don't really know what the fp is reading as I don't have a gauge. but could you explain the overflow valve?

guroo987 05-14-2007 10:12 PM

change fuel filter first. than try an apps adjustment and reset. NEED TO KNOW WHAT FUEL PRES IS! might have a injection pump going out. go to an autozone or kragen etc and have the codes pulled and get back to us.

2001shrtbedcummins 05-14-2007 10:21 PM

sorry...this is my 91 can't really do the underhood throttle with a vp pump...besides I don't need one of those "overvalved" trucks.

Cowboy_Customs 05-14-2007 10:27 PM

I dont believe the lift pump would do that. The VE has the capability of drawing its own fuel, just makes it a dog. Possibly the governer spring, but I suppose Id be more inclined to believe the IP is on its way out. I'll ask some folks n see what I come up with for you.

what would cause the ip to go out though?

ttt

OK, I got with a friend of mine that knows much more then i do. It could be a clogged fuel filter, or bad lift pump. Does it start generaly easy? It could possibly be air in the lines as well. Just basically isnt getting fuel.

Try some of these, replace filter, install fuel pressure guage, put in a section of clear hose in the fuel line. (the closer to the IP the better) I dont know how to really test the lift pump, but I would assume you could pull the outlet, and use the manual prime lever and see if it is putting anything out. If that ends up being it, not a bad time to upgrade to a 2nd gen 12valve piston pump.

The IP could go with age. How many miles r on it?

2001shrtbedcummins 05-16-2007 06:02 PM

it starts great runs great when you ease it up to 50 anything over 1/4 throttle or 50 mph it cuts out. It's a bad lift pump I believe. Already changed fuel filter already bled the injectors.

it's the driveshaft off of my injector pump...it's supposed to be a few inches longer :w2:

CHenry 06-01-2007 01:54 PM

uh hu! Looks like you have found the culprit.
Good job.
Glad i aint got one of those IPs....i hear they are pricy and go out often.

Cowboy_Customs 06-01-2007 03:06 PM

Pricey, yes. often? not by far! 339K on the original before my accident.
the general concensus is around 800 bucks for a rebuild. Just get a stock rebuild, with 1 exception, have them install the 3200 rpm gov spring. My local shop will do it for 600, 800+ for a "hot pump"
Glad you found the culprit, but man that sucks!

naw I'm just messin with ya'll. Some idiot welded the nut and the gear and they had to do that the get the durned injector pump off. Got it back but the idiots bumped up the idle...this thing flies in D just idling along. then they put all those little dadblasted paint marks on it so I can't play. :booo:

2001shrtbedcummins 07-28-2007 09:38 PM

Anybody ever heard of rebuilders puttin loctite on the friggin smoke screw? I can't turn the thing to save my life?

DazedandConfused 07-28-2007 10:06 PM

Some rebuilders will do anything to keep you from messing with them.

Andy

2001shrtbedcummins 07-28-2007 10:16 PM

what a bunch of a-holes...anybody know what dissolves loctite?

jasonfriedlin 07-30-2007 12:47 PM

They put loctite on your smoke screw? I'm sure some kind of chemical will eat it up, but I don't have a clue what.

2001shrtbedcummins 07-30-2007 04:08 PM

Yea, it sure as shoot won't turn...didn't want to do it real hard as it would strip
