Coolant Temp. Sensor

Can someone explain to me how the coolant temperature sensor works?Reason being, I have thoughts (this always leads into some kind of a project) of installing one in the fuel tank. With hopes of using it via a relay to run a 12v pump to keep the biodiesel warm in the winter. If this temp. sensor is a on/off style switch I can use it to monintor the fuel temp.Simply by hooking it to a relay to run a pump to move engine coolant into the fuel tank, all by itself ( I HOPE ).Thanks in advance.Hopefully I do not post this in the wrong place.Have a great weekend everybody.:c:

ur temp sensor isnt a switch for sure cause if it were the gauge wouldnt change with temperature, it would be in one of 2 places and thats it. there are things that may work for u such as thermodiscs or maby some kind of aquastat or somethin. part of the key will be to have it set for the right range. u ned to do somethin similar to how a boiler furnace works where if the temp gets to cold the switch closes and if it gets too hot the switch opens.
