Smoke/Performance

Okay guys...new truck what can I do real cheap...like free...:q:

the free stuff is the best. id start with gauges before any pump mods are performed. then grind the fuel pin and move the star wheel down all the way and bring it back a turn.
fuel screw in a couple turns and advance the timing an 1/8 of an inch
here is a good link to help you out. http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/more_power/Power_ve.htm

then when your bored with that and have some money to spend a BHAF and a compressor upgrade are fairly reasonable i purchased a stage 3 compressor and housing from gillett deisel for 180.00 + shipping.

injectors would be good to get the benifits of the comp upgrade.

here are some fuel pin pics for you

oh i forgot the thing that will really make a difference in performance, a 3200 rpm governor spring you can pick one up at your local inj shop for under 20.00
here is a link on how to install one.

pump adjustments and 3200 spring will make so much difference for $20 you won't believe it. only problem is then your hooked and the money gets bigger from then on. still, i've got about 1500 in improvements and can't believe how it tows and runs.

just seeing if my sig works now.

yep, it does. this has been a test of the emergency horsepower network, in event of an actual emergency, a large cloud of smoke will appear.

these "tips" work on an '89 as well? Fairly easy to accomplish these in an afternoon?

Out of curiosity, how bad is MPG effected?

Begle1 03-19-2007 11:57 PM

Everything's the same for an '89.

As long as you're soft on the fuel pedal the mileage won't be affected. Until you learn to be soft, you'll probably be washing 1-2 mpg off of the rear of your bed.

mpg will be better, if can keep your foot out of it :dm: you could do it in a day if your pretty good with a wrench and have everything to do it, but i would just do a little at a time as you get an understanding of what the mods do.

the problem with the 89 is that your boost will go to 35 or more. i know b/c thats how i blew my head gasket. all i did was one half turn for the power screw. i am working on gettin a intercooler made for my truck to bring boost down
