New turbo

Hey all, first post here, I really like it so far, I have a 1992 d-350 with a 5 speed, dually, I was looking into get a new turbo, I have not the slightest idea what to get, it has a straight pipe exhaust, it's 3" but going to go to 4 or maybe 5" soon, air intake, BD fuel pin, going to do a governor spring, and tune the pump, any suggestions what turbo would be good for this mix, I may also put new injectors in this engine, and someone could explain what Is good and what is bad about the turbo and what all the sizes are, I know guys like the 60 mm, but have no idea what any of those measurements really mean, it's also the factory turbo on it, and what In the hell does a waste gate do? I've heard that they're good but no idea what they do, thanks everybody

HX35 turbo would be a good one for you, or an He351 maybe if you plan to put bigger injectors in. Hx35 will spool much quicker than stock and is just altogether a better turbo than your stock turbo and it is a direct bolt on if you get one with the correct exhaust housing. He351 off of a 3rd gen dodge will require fab to make it work. you should be able to find an hx35 for $100-250

Thanks man, what does everyone think about a compound setup, I've heard that they make the engine run hotter because they're pushing more hot air down the engine, but the truck is intercooled If that makes a difference, I've also heard that it helps the engine run cooler because it gets rid of the exhaust faster, I'm not sure what to believe, and this is my first diesel so I'm not that great with them, but I'd like to have something in the 400 horse range, Im eventually going to pull a car trailer, so I'd like to have something to keep it somewhat cool, and make good power, and I'd like to run 4 or 5 inch exhaust also, you guys think it would be a good setup or would it cut the engines life down? Any help is appreciated

I don't know a whole lot about about compound turbo's on 12valves but id say that would be a great setup. You would need them to get 400hp or a big single but that would be laggy. Also 400rwhp is getting close to the max with the VE inj. pump but can be done with correct mods and tuning.
Hx35 while it is a great step up from stock won't get you 400 horse but can get u above 300hp easy. If you want 400rwhp i would suggest compounds or a He351 off of a 3rd gen, as well as a set of injectors from Eric at Hungry Diesel. I would suggest talking to him. He really knows the easiest and best way to get the power numbers you are looking for.
