1st gen upgrade help!!!

Im looking to start upgrades for my first gen. I have in mind what i wanna do to 1st i just would like some input since i know there is alot of knowlege on here.

To start off i am one of the lucky ones with the VE pump that is not adjustable. With that being said im looking at starting off with injectors and turbo upgrades instead of a new VE pump.

Im looking at 5X.0012s DAP injectors, a 60mm compressor upgrade for the h1c( currently have 18cm housing) and 3200gsk.

Does anyone see any issues with these upgrades giving my situation with the VE pump?

novapat 09-25-2014 10:39 AM

why cant you adjust you ve?

93cummins12v 09-25-2014 02:40 PM

Ve pump

I have turned the power adjustment screw all the way in and no extra fuel is given. I found a couple articles that mention it online. But don't to give much details on it.

VE pump

Turning up the pre 94 Ram diesel injector pump

here is another link that mentions the VE the doesnt repond to adjustments, gives no information on why!? I guess im the only one to have this issue??

cumminsblazer 09-27-2014 01:08 AM

Every ve pump is adjustable check out the sticky to understand a little more about the ve pump and understand and thing called run away and be scared of it and have a friend with a 2x6 block of wood there with you once you understand what to do to make sure you dont loose you engine you key switch will NOT save a run away and dont be one of those guys that tunes to have a coal runner tune for power I tuned for power and I can put many cars and trucks to shame and I only push grey at most and im talking running 13 quarter mile times and the first thing most important!!!!! :scare2: GAUGES :scare2: a smoky truck is a hot exhaust temp truck so on that note good luck:c: oh and get a 366 gov spring 3200rpm no joke best $20 you will have ever spent

93cummins12v 09-27-2014 02:52 AM

The 366GSK is on the list. The gauges were my first purchase and i just got done installing them. I have done alot of reading on the VE pump and have tried all adjustments. I turned the fuel pin and it helped. as far as adjusting the full power adjustment screw and the star wheel:argh:, there is no change in fuel flow or increase of power...if ALL ve pumps are adjustible then perhaps is the something internally wrong with my pump? the truck runs great and is dependable i have zero issues with the pump (besides making the adjustments) i am well aware of the runaway situation and have moved the power screw all the way in "clockwise" and all the way out "counter" so im not sure what the issue may be. Thanks for your help! :argh:

cumminsblazer 09-27-2014 11:45 AM

Did you take the lock coller off you full power screw not just the cover?

93cummins12v 09-27-2014 12:35 PM

Yes. loosen the lock nut with a 13mm wrench. Then adjust the screw in and out. The bolt moves in and out with no issues its not corroded or ceased in any way.

cumminsblazer 09-28-2014 11:34 AM

There is a safety lock ring on there too that you have to break off have you taken that off? Its a like a metal sleeve that is wrapped around the full fuel screw

I attached a pic of the it I was I. A hurry so it's not a very good pic but yes everything is removed from the screw. :scare2:

cumminsblazer 09-29-2014 12:50 AM

Hmm I look at mine in the light tomorrow

93cummins12v 09-29-2014 05:54 AM

Thanks for your time

cumminsblazer 09-30-2014 01:17 AM

Ok so your at the right screw thats your full fuel screw how many turns have you turned that in and when you were turning it in did your idle go up p.s that is the screw that you can get a run away from

93cummins12v 09-30-2014 07:21 AM

I have bottomed the screw out turning it clockwise, and backed it all the way out. No change in idle when moving the screw.:dang:

cumminsblazer 09-30-2014 09:35 AM

Hmm thats real odd well just wait till you get your 3200 rpm spring at that time you will be able to see whats going on inside the pump in that area the rpm spring is going to be one of your biggest difference you will feel

93cummins12v 09-30-2014 09:41 AM

just ordered it. will be here tomorrow. I will be installing it sometime this week. Is there anything specific i should look for while im in there? i will take and post pics and see if anyone notices anything different.

cumminsblazer 09-30-2014 11:44 AM

Not sure I havent heard of that happening so im taking its just looking for something worn out or broken make sure you take note on the index of the trottle shaft when you take it off ill do my best to look for the pics

I got the pump taken apart and the new spring installed I ran out of daylight so I didn't get it all back together but I did get some pics. Everything is clean and looks like new nothing worn or broke that I could see. Everything to me looks the same as all the pumps I have seen online. I will post some pics

Everything looks fine to me have you gotten a fuel pin or you running stock and are you Manuel or auto just wondering

93cummins12v 10-02-2014 05:17 AM

Stock fuel pin but I have rotated it to the steepest point. Defiantly saw an increase in power when I did this. Auto transmission.

Rx7man 10-02-2014 04:24 PM

While you're at it, I have heard that advancing the timing can make quite a difference (in EGT's too)... Again those 13mm nuts are a misery to get to, I cut and welded an old box end wrench and was able to do it OK, I was told to rotate the top of the pump toward the engine as far as it'll let you, don't know what that works out to in degrees, but it sounds happy there. I'll keep an eye on this as my dad's truck is a 93 with an auto and he wants a little better response.

93cummins12v 10-02-2014 04:39 PM

so i got the spring all installed little power increase +5 pounds of boost at 24psi. egt are up to 1050 max it hard to get over 1000. still no extra fuel with the power screw maxed out. NO SMOKE... I did the timing bump, and yes those bolt are a pain i took a wrench and heated it up and put curve on it seemed to make it easier. But as for adding fuel i am stumped i have no idea what is different in my pump compared to other pumps. :scare2:

Rx7man 10-02-2014 05:19 PM

I don't think those pumps are as fussy as the P pumps, but have you checked to make sure your lift pump is keeping up?

Good EGT's at least..

cumminsblazer 10-02-2014 06:50 PM

Im stumped with my 93 I dam near maxed my pump turned in my smoke screw to the point it was flat with the nut turned my fuel pin and had timing bump and lastly 3200gsk and I hazed at ideal then black when I stabbed it then cleared right up pushing 36 psi now I have dam near all the smoke gone with some special tunning and thats with my fuel pin and my 5x14 injectors I wish I would of gone 7x12 injectors to kill off all the smoke

Rx7man 10-02-2014 09:25 PM

I hope you're not pushing 36 PSI from the stock turbo.. that's a pretty dicey area to ask it to work, it's certainly way out of it's efficiency and making a whole lot of hot air.

93cummins12v 10-03-2014 08:43 AM

I'm stumped as well I'm thinking I'm gonna go with the 5x12s and see what difference is with those

93cummins12v 10-03-2014 08:46 AM

Oh and as for the lift pump I'm not sure how to check it?

cumminsblazer 10-04-2014 01:59 PM

Im pushing 40 out of the hx35 and my 5x14s my egts never go above 1100 I only wish I would of gone with a 7 hole injector to get away from the idle hazing

Rx7man 10-04-2014 03:07 PM

cumminsblazer, is your EGT sensor before the turbo?
My 60mm HX35 is insufficient for what I'm asking from it with 60hp injectors, I'll readily get 1300F egt's and have to back off. 40 PSI is certainly outside of the design range of the turbo, and is *probably* overspeeding... it's rated for up to 3.0:1 pressure ratios and 60 lb/min flow (these are peak operating parameters, not where it's efficient.

Rx7man 10-04-2014 11:39 PM

edit, that 60 lb/min is wrong, Holset uses odd units of flow, It's in the 40ish lb/min flow rate

cumminsblazer 10-05-2014 02:05 AM

Lol yes pre turbo just got some great tunning that made a world of a difference I know im asking alot from the hx 35 for rpm but egt is not a problem one of my last things I did really made the difference with my egts and my smoke and gained power was putting a boost controller between the fuel pin diaphragm and the manifold

cumminsblazer 10-06-2014 03:22 PM

How many turns do you have your full fuel screw turned in?this whole your pump not being able to be turned up is bothering me

93cummins12v 10-06-2014 06:14 PM

At this point I'm not sure I've jacked with it so much as of now i have it turned clockwise as far as I can. It gets tight like I have it bottomed out

cumminsblazer 10-07-2014 01:30 AM

Thats so weird im lost for words and I seen in the pics that you took off the lock ring maybe try starti g a new thread about that not doing anything just to get the right eyes on seeing the problem
