Poor steering at idle
So I have had the truck about 1.5 years, slowly fixing things, the other day it was puking power steering fluid, the lucas stop leak i put in it. This happened when it was cold, I flushed it filled it with power steering fluid and its all good now. Except it has never had power steering at idle, so when turning into the the neighborhood i need to rev the engine so I stay in my lane. trying to back into a spot or leave the spot I must rev in order to not hit anyone. It does not seem to have any problem at speed or at mid to high rpm. Is there any way I can have power steering at low rpms? Or is this just a 1st gen issue?

May be a dumb question, but seeing your sig says 320k+ when was the psp replaced last?

low psi... bad pump!!!

Diablo, i don't think it has been replaced, a lot of stuff is stock on this truck.
Novapat, thanks, so your truck has good power steering at idle? Can you turn your wheels while parked? I am just trying to get an idea of what this truck will do, get an accurate goal for when I work on it. Jim |
yep. my truck did the same thing last winter and I replaced the pump and it was good to go.. I noticed it not working more in the cold mornings when it was weak!

Sweet, I will replace it and look forward to being able to turn the wheels while stopped.
Thanks again, jim |
Novapat, did you change the pump yourself? If so, could you tell me what brand of pump, and where you got it? Also what all needed to be done to change it and prime and bleed?

I got the pump from napa. did it myself. I pulled the vac. pump with it and resealed it while replacing the power steering pump. got the vac. pump reseal kit from genos garage. I have this in my 89 suburban and use the original chevy stering box.
