Charging issues?

Hey guys. I have a 1991 non intercooled cummins. 2wd 5 speed.

I've been having charging issues since I've had the truck. So I tested the alternator at the auto parts store and it passed. Replaced my battery with 2 class 31 batteries. I also checked the volt regulator when it's running and it has 12 volts on both wires from the plug. Not sure if that's correct.

The volt gauge is showing about 10-11 volts but when I crank it won't even turn the motor over. And when I jump it, it will stay running but I can watch the volt meter go down if the heater, turn signals, or headlights. And drastically if the grid heater or fuel heater kicks on.

I'm just confused now that it won't even turn over. Any help would be appreciated.

And it's also 5 degrees here but it's been doing it since summer.

I'll try once more to communicate. I'm only semi-literate on the computer and even have trouble typing. Anyway, I had a puzzling charging problem on my '92 Cummins (Took someones advice that I needed to change my alternator even though it checked out O.K. My serpentine belt had shredded and cut the wires on my crank/cam position sensor located on the front of the block above the harmonic balancer. I replaced the sensor and it started charging just fine.

Oh okay awesome. Thanks for the reply. Understood you completely. But I think the 91 non intercooled didn't have the crankshaft position sensor or ECM.

But! I did find my problem. Took the alternator off my 95 cummins and threw it on to take that out of the equation. Same problems. But I just went ahead and bought a new volt regulator. And now everything's working as should. Even with the stock alternator back on the truck.
