92 dually; broke odometer. To buy or not to buy? - that is the question.

Hey, I just found a one owner 92 2wd automatic dually for sale. They want $4600. Odometer reads 128000. It was owned buy a 68 year old man who traded it in for a new truck. No one seems to know when the odometer went out. I drove it and it rides nicer than my crown vic... except the tranny wants to stick around the 47 mph range. Truck has fairly new tires and a flawless body. Has now blow-by; I lifted the oil lid and checked. Their is also no gunk under the valve cover. Appears to have been maintained well. Does have oil leaks under the engine. I'm going to say it's safe to assume the tranny problem is the TPS typical issue most have.

Should I buy it? I'm iffy with the tranny and but especially about the odometer. Tried to talk the dealership down but they wouldn't budge. I want a diesel to start a hot-shot service. Don't know if I can legally with a truck having the odometer repaired or not.

From a dealership? No. From a privet party? Maybe. Without knowing what the actual mileage is, you taking a big risk. A cheap transmission overhaul is $2000+. You can probably find one in that price range with known miles.

Good luck getting that information from a dealer.
