Truck Engines Used As Industrial Engines
 
A guy over on another forum is having trouble with a couple of 1st gen engines. He is using them like industrial engines, running irrigation pivots. They are overheating but his two industrial engines, also 5.9 cummins, aren't. The question is, can you convert an rpm based truck engine injection pump governor to a load based industrial engine injection pump governor? I know you can swap the pumps, which might be easier in the long run, but that's not the question.

the housings are different i believe, i know the dont use a AFC, does he actually know whats causing the overheating???? might not be the pump......the motors shouldnt overheat as long as they got proper water circulation and radiator size.......those motors should run at 2500 RPMs continously with no problems, hell at 3000 RPMs it shouldnt get hot.......

he says they are overheating at 1700 rpm. he cloned the set up that he has for the industrial engines, 7 1/2 gallon radiator and 4 electric fans.

something is wrong, they arent getting enough air flow, what type of fans are they using open air or factory ones that needed shrouded???? cause a fan that needs shrouded will let a vehicle over heat, and are they all in the same location or different places?????

I dont know, I haven't even seen pictures. I'll let him know the info about the fans though.


A question I had though, would the turbo matter? I'm not sure how big the difference is between an industrial 5.9 turbo and a truck turbo are but if these engines are pumping enough water to run a 70 ac irrigation pivot at only 1700 it sounds to me like they might be lugging and running on the rich side and thus the extra heat.

I've already told him to get a pyro and compare the egts on both the industrial and truck engines.

I would check the simple things like circulation and such. Pull the thermastat and check it out, might be sticking but I'm thinking his fans cant keep up with the demand. Unless those pumps are putting a load on that engine I seriously doubt it is making boost. Also does the industrial engine run the H1C with the large exhaust housing like most the older first gens did? If he is not building any kind of boost it will cause it to get hot as well I would think. I know my Cummins I've had running 1700RPMs really didnt build boost. I would look into making sure that the fans are pushing the air needed to cool it down since it sounds like he has ditched the stock fan and is running electrics. If so maybe put the stock fan back on if possible.

the guy is running 4 electric fans. I asked him that first. the thing will overheat without a thermostat in it. I think it is getting too much fuel myself. industrial governors are different.
