top speed
its very annoying to be cruisin down the highway basically floored at 75mph. So I was wondering what I could do to get my top speed up so I could actually be able to driveon the highway. I have the 3 speed automatic transmission.

Well, a couple of questions. WHat is your gear ratio? 2wd or 4wd? Any Intake mods? Exhaust mods? Your 3 speed auto can only do so much. What kind of RPMs are you hitting at 75 mph? What is your tire size? ........:humm:Brain fart.......
pretty sure gear ratio is 3:08 its 4x4. Has a K&N intake filter, the exhaust is straight back but is still stock, and im hitting around 2500 rpm at that time. I can hit 90 if im really trying to torture my truck.
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- tires are 31 inch |
While not knowing the rolling radius of those tyres, 3:08 gears with direct drive will give you somewhere close to those speeds at 2500 rpm
so what are you suggesting I do?
Overdrive gears are about the only way you will get the engine rpm down.
Your maxxed out on final drive ratio. Being a 4X it may take some doing, different transmission with over drive is required. Sorry for the good news |
thanks man
x2. If ya wanna bring down the RPMs and increase speed, Look into an overdrive unit and split the gears. You will essentially end up with a 6 speed trans. Lower RPMs at 75 will also net you much better MPGs. Even better if you slow it down some. The good Lord gave us multi-lane highways and streets so others can pass if they think youre too slow.........:w2:
If you have enough driveline length you maybe able to squeeze an overdrive unit behind the trans but being 4x4 you will only be able to use it in high range 2 WD drive.
Sounds more like an overdrive setup out of a later model would be the easiest. |
where can i get an overdrive unit?
Sorry can't help there, be a case of trolling through some of the posts in these forums about what will fit, Thought I had seen something about 518's being overdrive,
Gear Vendors do a stand alone unit but it is long. |
Research on GOOGLE. There's tons of information online. Or you can try this forum as well. Type your inquiry in the "search" box above, and you will get information.
drop down to page 2 of this line of threads, "1993 direct overdrive"
It is on 2WD but will give some idea of what model to look at. |
thanks guys
You could Go with a new set of rearend gears, go up on your tire size, or if ya feel spunky, throw in a gear venders unit....
OR, just put in a auto with a overdrive. Wanna be crazy, put in the overdrive, and then put on oversize tires, then a 3200rpm spring. |
Don't know the ettique of mentioning elsewhere to look but our baby brothers have some interesting parts in their classifieds
Remove your high idle screw, and install a 3200 spring. Gives a little more.
i have the 3200 rpm spring in it. top speed was about 75 with the stock spring haha. But what does removing your high idle screw do? is it alright to take that out?
I've always had my high idle screw in the glove box, won't hurt a thing. My truck used to top out around 85, now will do over 100mph with no idle screw and the 3200 spring. But I have overdrive. Removing the screw just lets the throttle travel farther.

WOOHOO, Drive it like ya stole it!!!!!:rocking:
How's ole shakey feel at 100? I know betsy feels pretty intense at those speeds.
Lot of wind noise but its pretty smooth all the vibrations even out but thats the scariest photo ive taken

thanks for all the advice guys! very helpful!
If it's a 4x4 I would put a lift and 33's or 35's on it. With 35's, 2,000rpm would be about 67mph. 2,500rpm should be about 84mph. Running the truck at 2500rpm all the time won't really hurt it, it's just annoyingly loud.
Back out the circled screw n stick it in your glove box. Also the throttle linkage at the pump and the return spring switch holes for a more crisp throttle response you will have to readjust the rod but it's worth the 2 minutes of work.
Alright but what do you mean the circled screw? could you post a pic or another forum link so I know what screw your talkin about?
Move your throttle towards the pump head. The screw it hits before the head is the high idle screw. You want to let the throttle hit the head.
