To gear vendor or not to gear vendor???.?.
 

Was debating about adding /converting getrag 5 speed to over under 10 speed. Am trying to read as much as I can, anybody here actually have one? Mostly it will see flatland highway driving and towing of boat or bobcat. Carry a 9 foot camper hunting and fishing. Just regular guy stuff. I live on acreage, and use my car for city driving etc. was wondering about rpm drop and potential mpg upgrades? Will I really enjoy this traveling thru mountains with camper? Are they low maintenance? Worth the 3-4 k? Please advise. Thanks, Dwayne

Why don't you get a NV5600, but they cost about the same. :D

Wouldn't think the 5600 would drop the rpm as much.

As long as the rpm's will still be fine it should do wonders for your truck. Just, Uh, would it fit or is that the problematic question? I think it should be worth it for sure, as long as you do all the possible research for potential problems, like RPM speed etc. You would prolly have to have a custom drive shaft though, should not be too big of a problem though if you know someone with a turning lay.:choochoo:

Yes I've got one. Here's my setup.
1990 Suburban, 3/4 ton, 4x4
Engine: 1989 6BT Cummins
Tranny: NV5600 w/ Gear Vendors O/D = 12 speeds
Turbo: HX-35
Axle Ratio: 3.73
Tires: 305/70/16

At 65 mph, my engine turns over at 1800 rpms in 6th gear and 1400 rpm's in double overdrive. This is a 400 rpm difference and the engine runs a lot quieter. For fuel economy, I get mid 20's on the freeway driving steadily between 60-65 mph. Where the Gear Vendors is really nice is when towing. Being able to split the gears makes it so you're always in the power band. Pulling my 1972 Chevy truck as pictured with a load of stuff in the back of both vehicles, I got 20 mpg.

For maintenance, I change the oil on the G/V each time I change the oil on my engine. It's very easy to do and it takes just 1 quart of oil.

You the one to decide whether the expense is worth it. The benefits again are much less engine noise inside the cab, better towing and better fuel economy. Of course, if you've got 4.11's or 4.56's you're going to see more gain in fuel economy than someone with 3.73's. If you've got 3.54's, your engine will lug. If the only reason is for fuel economy, it's probably not worth it. There are cheaper ways to attain better fuel economy such as axle swaps.

yep i have a gear vendor in my 89 suburban as well. th400 373! i love the gearvendor!
