My '93 2-wd used to get really fantastic mpg. (22city and 26hwy).

But at 205,000mi. the tranny started to go in it and then the Diff. started making lots of noise so...I replaced the tranny and TC. Then had the rear end rebuilt (by my local dealer).
The tranny & TC I got was a heavy duty one providing a firmer shift and a 3-yr. warranty (The warranty is the ONLY reason I got the heavy duty version).
But now I can only SQUEEZE 18mpg out of it (city) and I haven't even taken it on the hwy yet.

My question (s) is...

Will the shift points in the tranny have any effect on the mpg (I can understand maybe .2 or .3 mpg but 4?).
My dealer assures me they used the same 3.53 gearing in the diff. as otherwise they would have had to change the entire pumpkin(?).
So...where did my mpg go?

OH...it should be noted that the mech that installed th tranny told me I needed a new OD shift cable but it was no longer available (?). Can't find one in a wrecking yard near me...looking for suggestions on that one too.

In order to find the OD shift cable I recommend the website car-parts.com

It is connected to websites around the country. You probably won't find that specific part in the list of parts to choose from in the search, however you could search for the transmission for your truck, find the phone number for the salvage yard that has the tranny and call and ask about the cable, or search for any other part, you get the idea...Good luck

No such thing as an OD shift cable on a 93 auto. OD is controlled through the PCM. normally the tps sensor goes bad n causes it to not go into od or the switch itself on the dash.

Also those upgrades shouldn't change the mileage but should keep that tranny alive longer n take more abuse too.

I understand about the PCM controlling the OD.
Can you tell me what the cable does? Kickdown??

Well I talked to the dealer yesterday and he told me that when I changed out the Tranny & TC with a heavy duty one instead of Stock that they probably put in a Lockup TC.
Going from a non-lockup to a lockup TC will cost me at least 4-6MPG.

Ok...now I need to figure out a different way to get that back.
So I think the easiest place to start would be to install a 4" exhaust system.
Maybe after that a set of 40hp injectors?

I hate removing a perfectly good exhaust system though...and the injectors are ORIGINAL.

Your thoughts??

If it has the stock tranny there is no way they can put a lock-up converter in it. The diesel version of the a518 doesn't have that option.

I thought you were suppose to turn the starwheel all the way clock wise?

I belive the cable they are talking about is the throttle pressure cable. This lets the transmission know how hard you are stepping on the throttle so that it can adjust the shifts accordingly.

You turn the starwheel what ever way you want. Some like to drop it down for more smoke, others like me like it to the top for less smoke, and quicker spool-up by keeping you from over fueling the turbo. I've done both and would never drop mine to the bottom again. Up top is much better for daily driving in my truck.
