1990 Dodge Cummins (looking @ buying)
 

I am looking at a 1990 Dodge. I have owned a 1995 and currently own a 2002 and my son owns a 2002 also. I don't know anything about the older ones and I am wondering what to look for. It is an auto with 100k original miles, truck looks like it is in great shape and I can pick it up for between 4-5k. Do I need to be careful on these tranny's? What else do I need to look for and worry about?

ive got the same truck only mine has about a couple hundred thousand more miles the 727 torqueflite is solid, no overdrive unit to fail you just did the first rebuild on the tranny at 298 k everything else is stock except for the exhaust the only thing that comes to mind that ive had to do to it is the obvious front end work oh and the fuel pump almost two years ago but with only a hundred thousand on the odometer that thing is barely broken in u should probably buy it just make sure that u take it to a tranny shop (unless u do ur own work) and have ur bands adjusted, they say about every 100k for adjustment id probably pay $4500 to $5500 damn only a 100k huh:tu::rocking:

Yeah, it is super clean and he has had it for a few years and only put about 10k miles in it. A buddy of mines daughter had it before that. Going to give it some thought and make a decision soon on it. I could use it as a work/hunting truck and probably keep it for life. I need to check out the torque convertor issue I have heard people talking about and get that done with the bands maybe too

Im Looking ata 1993 cummins. the truck has 250k. the engine has 120k and the tranny has 60k. Its a 5 speed and I am not an expert on these trucks or trannies either. its wicked cleaned no rust. ex cab. it seems like a good deal. i can get it for 3500. it has some up grades like clutch upgrade, fuel pin and injecters. whats everyone think? anything would help :tu:

not sure if the 93 stil has a getrag in it or if they upgraded to a new venture 4500 if it is the getrag i wouldnt tow too heavy but its got a clutch upgrade so idont know still gonna be a good truck its a 1st gen. $3500 sounds awesome you could probably come close to that price on the engine alone once again barely broke in at 120k and for that 90 ctd they make billet shafts and converter components the biggest thing that ive heard of is people trying to back up a huge load with the auto completely munch the reverse sprag and the input spline goes after that which means new tranny case and they can be found but good luck if i had the money i would buy both of those trucks for the ninety with 100k depending on how its been driven should easily last you another 100k to 200k transmission wise and for the hunting use hope u got some farm land to hunt on or around its been my experience that those critters dont care but once ur in the woods theyre like oh shit diesel truck coming they must be hunting:choochoo:

i dont really trust the older automatic engines or even like the new ones . i think the older standard trannies are a lot more reliable ... ive had friends with old ford , and dodge auto trannies with problems

Well, I went and looked at it. The pictures he sent were a little deceiving, he said it needed a new front bumper where they had hit something. The hit was a little harder than I was expecting. It needs a new bumper, core support, headlight assembly, grill, and a front fender. Also it needs a new set of tires, I would be afraid to drive it home the 90 miles on the ones that are on it. Needless too say I offered way less than the 5k he was asking and was shot down. I figured with everything it needed it would be 2200-2500 if I did all the work just to get it on the road.

come to think 5 is way too high for a truck that needs work but it sounds like he wants blue book for a damaged truck not good:nope:
