What mods first for my first gen
 

I just wondering what mods I should get for my engine first. Cheaper budget.

Cheap mods (FREE) = Injection pump tweaks. I would NOT get carried away with these until you at least got a set of gauges. However you can do a little tweaking at the total cost of $0.

The BHAF = big air filter is a reasonable mod and helpful, some have just cut larger holes in the factory airbox for increased air flow.

Gauges = very important mod. Most important would be the EGT (exhaust temp) Would also want: Boost, Tach, and fuel pressure possibly trans temp (towing or heavy use)

I agree on the guages..then pump mods and filter...i would also get a denny t fuel pin(150.00) and a 4 inch exhaust (350.00)

grind your stock fuel pin at the deep end of the ramp only
Bosch 366 governor spring

if you have any money left over i would look for an hx35 off of a 12 valve second gen and bolt it in place of your stock turbo.

Welcome to the forum! I posted this on another site for a kid who was all about speed and HP so don't let any of the digs rattle you, they were meant for him, but the information pretty much goes for anyone new:

You need to do is make a decision: Are you keeping this truck till you get every one of the million miles Cummins talked about or just till its no fun anymore. If it's just till the fun runs out, any of the above mods will work for you, (the above mods crack was for all the outlandish stuff the guys had posted on the other site) if your planning on keeping it:

Step 1: Read, Read, Read, the cheapest mod you will ever do for your truck is a brain fix. (No, not just you, but every rookie)

Step 2: Get/set a budget. Speed, HP and the like is in direct proportion to the amount of money you want to spend. Without $$$$ you get no HP. The more $$$$ the more HP. (It's kinda like women, the hotter/faster models cost way more)

Step 3: Change all your fluids and filters. Good Fleetguard filters, and don't buy the cheap fluids, get synthetics, you do get what you pay for. ( and no, Fram is not a real filter)

Step 4: Buy a shop manual, not the crap at Advanced Auto, a real OEM Factory one. You can't tell us what you have broken if you don't know the names of the parts.

Step 5: Buy some gauges before you blow it up. The cost of gauges are like HP, (see step 2) the gauges with the cool lights that wiggle and jiggle cost $$$, the ones that just give you readings are $$ your not going to get out the door for less than $800 on a good day.

Now that little bit should take about $1250-1500.00 out of your wallet easy and you haven't even bought your 1st horse. (Told ya it wasn't cheap)

Step 6: Start a new thread, tell everyone what you have done, how much cash you have saved up for parts and what you would like to do. Keep in mind the trucks are used for different applications by different people so let them know that too.
