Cummins identification
 

I know this has been posted here a ton of times but I have got 2 questions about a couple of blocks I have.

The first is my 12 valve that is in my truck right now. I was searching (and praying) that there was no 53 on the passenger side of the engine and all I saw was "ABC". I can not find anywhere that has got a good wright up on all the casting numbers and casting flashes. Its in a 95 3500. Is it worth holding onto?

The second question is I also have a 24 valve block that confuses me to no end. First it has a ton of reinforcement castings all over the outside of the block where the water jacket is curved for the cylinders. Also the mechanical fuel lift pump is towards the front of the engine not the rear. Also the crankshaft should have 6 bolts for the harmonic ballancer but only has 4 like the 12 valves do but it has a much better casting than the 12 valve cranks do and also does not have a reluctor ring on it for a crank sensor like the 24V should. I am baffeled by this should I call it bastard?

To be a 53 block it has to be a storm block which is what the one is with the "bracing" u speak of, but storm block alone don't prove it's a 53. Most storm blocks are fine. HO 24 valves don't have a crank ring, only cam sensor, non HO have both, for dodge application at least. I've never seen any 5.9 cummins have anything other than 4 damper bolts. What fuel system does this thing have? Does it actually have a mechanical lift pump in the block? It must be newer than a dodge VP engine if the lift pump hole is toward the front. Thatis how a common rail dodge is and it is because they r using the same block they would use for an industrial rear gear train application. In that application the injection pump would block the lift pump port if it were closer to the back.

But u shoul definitely keep Ur 12 valve around. That is a good engine all around.
