Rear Brake Advice
 

Hello All

I have my buddies 97 4x4 dually and his back brakes wont stay adjusted and wont contribute to the braking of the truck......any advice?

This isn't a solution to the drum issue, but recently I swapped to Discs. I got an axle from a wreckers, and replaced what was needed, then did the swap. I now have disc brakes in the rear, and braking has improved significantly. Not sure if that's an option, but something to think about.

Mark the little adjuster star wheel and see if it moves or backs off by itself afyer driving. Is there any fluid coming from around the lines or cylinders? My guess is the cylinders are going bad.

Yes the adjusters could be frozen, or I believe it is a cable that automatically adjusts them. Or as stated above it could be a wheel cylinder problem as well!

Im at work (24hr shift) so im going to tear in to it tomorrow morning. worst case if i need to completely replace the rear brakes (drum,wheel cyl, shoes,adjusters,backer plate..ect) what kinda cost am i looking at?

You can probably get the drums turned for 10-15 bucks each if they arent horrible. Shouldnt need a back plate unless its beat all to hell and the rest shoes, cylinders and hardware will run you 50-100 depends on what shoes you want to run. Are you a corpsman by any chance??
