EGT question

Since adding my fuel plate and boost elbow, i bought and installed a boost and egt gauge. The first gauge was a cheapo gauge and never worked...at all. So I bought a JDM egt gauge and installed it last night. Lo and behold, it dont work either. Now Ive never put gauges in anything before except for tachs. I drilled and mounted my prob on the collector right before the turbo, hooked red to a 12v wire thats only on when my key is, grounded the black one then hooked black to black and green to green for my prob wires. Only thing i did different is I had to cut the ends off and lengthen the wires a bit to reach my gauge. But I used good connectors and made sure that all wires were crimpt correctly...but nothing. Need some advise because I seriously doubt that TWO gauges in a row were bums. Thanks alot.

does the gauge do anything? does the light come on when your lights are on?

I can't say for sure about your JDM gauge, but the lead wires on the Autometer EGT gauges I am familiar with cannot be cut or shortened. They are calibrated to a specific length based on the resistance requirement for reading a very low voltage signal off the thermocoupler.

I'd be almost willing to bet that's what your problem is. You should contact the manufacturer and ask that question.

Thanks for the replys everyone. It turned out that my neg wire off of gauge was crossed with the black prob wire coming off of gauge. I did one wire at a time and there is NO way I switched them. The lights would come on but nothing. I pulled the gauge out last night and hooked it up to my buddies prob on his '01 and it worked. Put back in mine and nothing. So on a hunch, i swapped my neg wire with the black prob wire and it started working. But it will only start reading under a hard and long load and its SLLOOOOWWWW! Meaning, I can get on it in 2nd through 5th up to about 75 or 80 and let off and then the gauge will shoot up to about 1150 then back down to 400 (start of gauge) and sit there. I also think that I blew the digital boost gauge as well. It only reads up to 29 lbs. and I think the extra boost blew the little sending unit because now its showing me pulling 14 lbs of vacume.........

Still sounds like you need new lead wires.

So buying another prob and leaving it the hell alone should fix er up?

Ok, so it just so happens that my buddy bought the same JDM egt gauge that I had for his ford 7.3. He got rid of his truck and so i got his gauge the other day. Brand new and still in the packaging. I installed it and took my time making sure everything was the exact way that the instructions said and i did not cut any wires or anything......nothing! I took it all back out tonight and while messing with the wires and reving her up, it would start working then stop. went through each wire, my ground and both signal wires, and it started to work once then nothing. EVERY since connection is perfect, i 9x checked them. I dont get it. :argh:
