fuel gauge issues

Hey everyone this is my first post here, and am looking to get a little insight on this annoying issue. The fuel gauge reads full when i have a full tank and will work until i use about a gollon of fuel then the gauge will go to completely empty and ding. it then will jump back up to completely full and then go too empty again. Any ideas? I would rather not replace the fuel sending unit..... but if thats what it takes.

Thanks for the help
Truman.
