96 12valve cummins dually

What can I possibly do to better my fuel mileage. It is automatic w/4 wheel drive and I'm getting about 12mpg. I have a friend with the same truck but a 98 and gets 17 to 20. I've installed new injectors and it didn't help at all. I'm running stock tires and everything else is pretty much stock.

Adjust your valve lash. .010 intake .020 exhaust they can make a world of diffence. can you hear a whole buch of ticking in your valve cover if you do Id do em.

casper83 11-03-2011 07:27 PM

Ill try to get that done this weekend. I know I need valve cover gaskets is there anything else I need? Thanks for the reply. Its the first one I got in months. And will adjusting the valve lash help with power?

dalton.lenoir 11-03-2011 07:33 PM

8 thousands intake and 18 thousands is what ive set valves at for years.. can tell the difference from 10 and 20 by driving it.

on a side note. i had this problem with my truck. the throttle cable got worn out. so i replaced it. not thinking anything about it. while off, have someone push your pedal all the way to the floor and get out under the hood and make sure you are getting all of the pump(make sure the pump opens all the way up when it is to the floor) it will cause it to shift funny and be at higher rpms all the time. there is no correct way to adjust this. a new cable is the same length. had to shim it on the pedal side.
let us know your findings and good luck :pca1:

Do you have a "CAT" in your exhaust? Stock muffler? these will kill the MPG. Timing may need bumped up to 15* or 16*

RanchhandTCR 11-03-2011 10:30 PM

Valve lash will help with power the lowest you can go is .08 Intake and .018 exhaust. I have a special tool to use to turn the engine over you may have to do it the redneck way and muscle the belt to turn the crank. There is a procedure to do this you have to start at TDC number one cylinder and do certain valves the trun it over 180 degress and do the next set. You should be able to look it up NAPA should have it on there website.

I have no cat or muffler. My exhaust dumps off about 6 feet behind the turbo. I may go ahead and and adjust 8 and 18 on the valves. But I will let you know what I get.
