starwheel help
ive got 1997 5 speed with no plate, plugged wastegate, and 16* timing. my question everyone talks about tuning the afc, and turing the starwheel, but no one really gives any solid info on how to tune it. i know you take the plug out and turns this way or that but i mean what are you really looking to do. does it just cut down on smoke bc fuel is being entered before boost can build or what? i guess im asking, my truck puts out ahefty cloud of smoke in every gear when shifting normally on up to about 1200 rpm til i start boosting decent but hazes until i shift, if iadjust the starwheel am i going to see/ feel a difference or just see a reduction/ or increase smoke? i there is a difference to be made powerwise what am i looking for in tuning the starwheel? hope all this makes sense? and ive search stawheel but theres like 8 pages of just random stuff

Yes, it will affect smoke. What the starwheel is doing is changing the preload on the AFC spring. This makes more/less boost required to move the diaphragm, which controls how far the fuel rack can travel under varying amounts of boost.

so is it better to crank all the way to the fender or all the way to the block, or can it be over adjusted. if adjusted one way or the other can i decrease lag, or increase lag?

there is a good post on new england diesel forums on p-pump function and how to do all the little adjustments, i forget where it is on there but you should be able to google new england diesel afc tuning and it should be the first one that pops up
