4.10 to 3.54 swap questions

I have a few questions for those of you who have done this swap.

What kind of shim kit did you use and where did you get it from?
How hard was it to get a good pattern?
Did you run in to any "extras" that needed to be purchased besides a shim kit or bearings?

I'm going to be swapping in a set of used OEM Dana 3.54 gears so maybe the stock shims will already be pretty close.

i saw online somewhere a 3,54 gear ratio that came with a spacer plate so it could be used on either carrier, i wanna know how you like the 3.54s over the 4.10s when your done, i was thinking about going a bit lower than the 3.54s i have now, im just looking a bit more off the line power when im towing the hoe

Would you be interested in selling your 4.10 gears when youre done?

Cumminspwr11, I think the spacer plate has to do with the case break of the Dana 80 axles. You can't go below 4.10 without changing the carrier or adding that plate.

Sudia247, I might. I just want to make sure I like the 3.54s first.

I guess I'm just going to order up a shim kit and see what I come up with.

i have set up alot of gear sets and there is no set answer to your question! every gear set is a little different and thus they all need different shims. the spacer will work but a new carrier is a better choice. if i had to guess you would be makeing your pinion shalower and then moveing the carrier to the right to tightin backlash but its anybodys guess until u are in there. just make sure u get it right towing heavy loads will kill an improporly set up diff! good luck
