cummins kdp issue

well my dowel pin must of came out last weekend woke up to a puddle of oil in my driveway and a huge hole ontop of the gear housing case gonna order a new case but need a way to quick fix it in the mean time holes about 1 inch by inch and a half in the top of the case so i was thinking patching it somehow with a piece of aluminium plate if anyone has any suggestions or experience could use some help on this i need to patch it cant get the part for a few weeks so any ideas or info would be appreciated and its a 98 12 v

kdp isnt something to mess around with. yours did the same as mine, putting a hole thru the case. when i tore mine apart, the pin was stuck between the cam gear n the case. if you continue to drive it, the pin can work its way down and fall between the gear on the crankshaft n the cam gear and it will snap the cam gear off. your valves will stop moving, but the pistons will keep goin... then you'll be looking at a few thousand dollars worth of damage instead of the couple hundred you are lookin at now. i would park the truck n find somethin else to drive until you can fix it.

how many miles did your truck have on it when it did it ????

yeah, dont patch it unless you can get teh pin out.

Pieces of the case arent a big deal, the gears will chew those up.

But the pin floating around can/will kill your engine. thats why its a killer dowel pin.

duct tape as a backer and jb weld can make a nice patch for the broken case

I was lookin into gettin a truck that had this problem right now it makes the truck cheaper,is it possable that gears were ruined already? They say it still runs. Is it possable it came out of the front cover when it hit it?

I wouldnt touch a truck that has a kdp issue.

Thats a hardened pin. Anything can be wrong inside of there.

The fact that the truck "still runs" would scare me even more.

Anyone with a damn bit of sense wouldnt start an engine with a dowel pin floating around inside of it.

Skip it. Get another truck. This is just someone elses nightmare they are trying to pawn off on you.

You could look down inside the hole in the cover with a bore scope to get a better idea of the damage.

But these engines are REAL expensive to replace. I wouldnt even consider buying one that had this issue. {Unless you know EXACTLY what you are getting into, and can afford to fix it when it all goes south}

It is POSSIBLE the pin came out. It is, however, HIGHLY UNLIKELY. Generally the pin gets wedged against the cover, and busts the cover. Then falls back down somewhere in the bottom of the timing cover. If it falls between the gears it can stop the cam while the engine is running. Causing lots of bent/broke shit in the head and or possibly even a piston or two.

If the pin is still in there, starting it is a bad idea. Cold oil is thicker, more chance of picking the pin up and it riding the gears back up to where it can get wedged in a bad bad place.

Id rather buy a totaled truck with a good motor, and swap it into a gasser {worthless} than buy a diesel truck with a bunk motor.

Actually thats exactly what i did. Now i have the sexy body of my old piece of crap ramcharger with the heart and soul of a 97 ctd.

its like the 6 million dollar man....if he were fred sanford.

Well i ended up taking a gamble and gettin the truck. I figured if it still, starts there cant be too much wrong with it inside. Im workin in tearin down to get the cover off and see what it looks like today

i would have bought it too.:tu:
