what way to i turn my star wheel
 
stock 94 cummins just lookin for a little more power. i have a 96 with the star wheel turned up. but i dont know what way to turn the star whee :argh:l. any advice?

so i dont turn it towards the motor? its towards the drivers side fender?

Before attempting to alter your P7100 injection pump it's required to have a boost and pyrometer gauges. Attempting to alter setting on the pump without gauges will possibly cause catastrophic failure of the engine. Don't risk it!

The AFC housing is used for the sole purpose of keeping emissions in check. It does a good job of keeping black smoke levels down and can be a valuable tool when turning up your truck. The key to making it work is to keep the pump from fueling too much when there isn’t enough boost available to burn all of the fuel that would otherwise be injected. To do this, it holds the fueling arm back and keeps it from moving ahead. It can be thought of as having the fuel plate all the way back, and then some (rather than all the way forward which would be as much fuel as possible).

The way it works is by having the boost pressure fed directly into the back of it and using that pressure to push against a spring. When the pressure is high enough (usually over 5psi), the AFC arm moves back farther than the fuel plate and allows the fueling arm to go until it hits the fuel plate. The amount of pressure required to do this can be changed by adjusting the starwheel.

To do this, use an 8mm allen wrench to take the plug out of the top of the AFC housing. Then you can see the gear in there and all you do is turn it. A flathead screwdriver works best. If the gear is moving up towards the radiator, it will take less pressure to overcome the spring and you will get more smoke when you floor it because it won’t have enough pressure built up yet to burn all the fuel. If the gear goes towards the cab, it will take more pressure to let it go to full fuel and will prevent smoke.
