Tryin to time it after the kdp fix

I got the truck fixed after the kdp fell out, and I have the timing kit for it with every piece except the adapter deal that goes on the dial indicator, so I have been Tryin to time it by ear, I have it runnin but not great and I always get it to advanced or to slow. I need a better way to do this or maybe you could use a regular dial indicator? Idk but I adjusted it about 20 times and I haven't gotten it right yet

if you line up the pump timing pin and the engine timing pin it will be set at your engines stock timing setup. I would not set it by ear. 1/8 inch on the crank can be off a couple degrees

When is the pump at Tdc? The cam gear timing pin is for the motor at Tdc am I right?

I just took it for a drive and it will barely pull itself up a hill in 5th and the only time it seems like it has any power is when you bog it down and it will smoke like crazy, then when the turbo spools up it will take off. But not like it used to.

that usually means its retarded.

for pump timing there is a 15/16 plug on the side of the pump. this was what I had a hard time with. there is a plastic pin with a U looking end that should be on the inside of the plug. take a mirror and have someone rotate the engine(makes it quicker than you doing both at the same time) look for the pin to appear. when it appears stop rotating. try to slide the U pin in it should move in and out freely even with oily hands. that is pump timing. I usually pull the gear at this point clean the shaft etc .

bar the engine to top dead center and then find the hole in the cam gear. that is engine timing.

now that both pins are aligned(but not staying in the pump or engine when baring over the engine) make sure shaft is clean and place pump gear in place. tighten nut and washer down. and put back together.

I'm gonna time it with the motor and pump at Tdc tommorow but I have come to the conclusion that my head gasket is leakin, I got a pulse in the radiator and since I pulled the head/rocker bolts it runs worse than it used to. So I'll pull the head and see. But if I do that I'm gonna want to pull the whole dam thing and go through it all lol
