Cummins Vs. 6.5

Alright i want either a 6.5 Turbo Diesel or a 1995-1999 12v Dodge cummins, which truck stock would get better fuel mileage. Thanks, they woudl be ext. cab short bed too

cummins95 04-16-2011 05:31 PM

cummins hands down. longer lasting, great fuel mileage if ur easy with ur right foot. plus wayyy more in the way of aftermarket if u ever wanna get some more out of it. just watch the auto trans in the dodge. they're weak. i burned thru 3 on a stock engine before i switched to the 5 speed

BRE 04-16-2011 07:59 PM

Please dont buy a 6.5 They are very weak motors just in stock form. Cummins all the way on this specific question.

Pyro690 04-16-2011 11:41 PM

I had a 95 6.5 before I bought my 97 5.9. My 6.5 turned itself into a V10, without any mods. Never beat on it. If you want a engine that will last, buy the Cummins. Best engine ever put in a pick-up. :c:

Big Grey 04-17-2011 08:24 AM

what kind of mpgs are some of you getting out of the cummins and how much would it cost me to put in a manual trans?also cummins 95, wat lift you got on that? thanks

bluedieselram 04-17-2011 12:53 PM

id choose the cummins by a country mile.my 95 12valve stock was getting 18mpgs

BRE 04-17-2011 06:25 PM

My 94 5 speed truck, on a 486 mile tank my gps said I averaged 32 mph and I got 15. On a 530 mile trip non-stop trip averaging 70-75 by my gps i get 16. Both my styles of driving kill fuel mileage and on top of everthing else I have a POORLY tuned afc, and 5x.014's.

Big Grey 04-17-2011 06:26 PM

How much does it cost to put a manual tranny into a auto tranny truck lol?

BRE 04-17-2011 06:28 PM

Depends on a huge variety of things. I cant answer that but you have the option of doing it yourself, having someone do it, cost of parts, etc. Lots of variables

Big Grey 04-17-2011 07:05 PM

well, having someone else do it for sure im not very good with motors and stuff like that lol and the cheapest way in parts probably.

cummins95 04-17-2011 08:58 PM

why not just buy a manual truck then? save ya a whole lot of time n money. n i can get over 20 mpg with mine bein nice to it. my lift is just a tough country 2.5" leveling kit

94Cumminz 04-17-2011 10:04 PM

i get 15-19 mpg depending how i drive :w2:

johnfak 04-17-2011 10:05 PM

Friggin 12v can get 28mpg

I like mechanical injection/timing !!!

Just think about emissions etc

BRE 04-18-2011 02:43 AM

Well I believe that fixed timing hurts our fuel mileage, not help.

Re: Cummins Vs. 6.5

The only thing the 6.5 is good for is descent mileage there is nothing else remotely good about those engines. Given those 2 choices I would choose the cummins all day long, second to the powerstroke LOL

joey 04-18-2011 03:18 PM

6.5 are good motors and get somewhat good mpg its all how you drive it. Hands down cummins has way more to offer tho as far as mods you can do.

Big Grey 04-18-2011 04:57 PM

see i would just find a truck if it was possible, i want to stay uner 6 grand for my truck have any were from 150,000 - 200,000 miles with ext cab 4 wheel drive and a manual transmisson, like impossible to find lol any suggestions?

BRE 04-18-2011 05:45 PM

Yea good luck with that! lol At least one thats in good shape

Big Grey 04-18-2011 07:43 PM

Should i just get the reg cab long bed lol and call it good?

BRE 04-18-2011 07:47 PM

Yea for that price range. And your still not gonna probably get a tip top shape truck. Where you from?

Hummin Cummins 04-18-2011 08:23 PM

Do a search on auto trader or craigs list lots of trucks to choose from and you will have no problem finding manual transmissions.

IMO the 6.5 is a poor excuse for a diesel, no power, not that good of fuel mileage, and hard starting in the cold. Thats already 3 strikes, need I couninue?

stackboy6.9 04-19-2011 01:48 AM

cummins all the way,ive been working on a 6.5 and its crap.has 150000 miles and it has cracked heads frozen lifters and blown head gaskets.and they are a pain to work on.

and injectors were bad

Big Grey 04-19-2011 01:56 PM

i am from franklin, ohio lol i just want to try to find a truck in somewhat good condition trying to find one for decent price range without rust lol

cumminspwr11 04-19-2011 06:34 PM

the autos are good if you put a little money into them, a good tc and valve body go along way, for the money you would put into a manual swap you can build a great auto, 6.5s are a glorified gas motor, they have alot of problems and the crankshaft will break if you try getting decent power out of them

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

and i had a 96 cummins 5 speed and broke 5th twice and a complete over haul once, one of the times 5th went out it took the shaft with it
