got a injector size question

so im going to be replacing the injectors in my 1997 cummins and the sales guy said go with a 500 hp bosch injectors. im not sure what this is meaning since iam new to deisels.the truck is all stock and going with bigger injectors would i have to do anymore mods to support the bigger size?

What turbo do you have? what timing will you be running? 500HP bosch injectors? where is he getting that info from cuz id love to find a factory bosch injector that is 500HP. Injector size is going to depend on what other mods are there.

If you are going to be throwing more fuel you might want to look into getting more air also or your exhaust temps will be high.You will also have to turn up your pump so it gives the injectors enough fuel. I'm also guessing these are the bosche 370 marine injectors

1SlowCTD 04-14-2011 09:09 AM

Bosch 370 Marines are only 370HP injectors.

BRE 04-14-2011 03:18 PM

So we are actually saying Marine 370's are 370hp? Um no afraid not.

Rick Stark 04-14-2011 03:30 PM

Ive got a set of Marine 330s and they gave me about 40-50 horse if that...I really want to see where you get that high of "horse power" injector for those prices too.

I dont think hes saying they add 370 hp but that they came on Cummins engines that were rated at 370hp, like calling the injectors on my 96 enigne 215hp injectors.

Cummins/Bosch does not rate their injectors as over stock, they are rated per that specific engine HP build. So a 370 Marine is just that, a 370HP injector for the marine application 5.9 Cummins with Marine style pistons that require a 155* spray angle. Hence why referring to injectors in the aftermarket world is pointless and inaccurate.

If you want to get down to the nitty gritty of injectors the only 100% accurate way to name them is "Hole Count x orifice size" or percentage of flow over stock. Horsepower ratings give false hope to many as well as confuse people. But since so many go by Horsepower rating, it is total HP acheived not amount of horsepower gained over stock application. If that was the case, then a 5x0.014"(435HP) injector in a 160 engine would net 595HP, in a 215 650HP, 180 would be 615, and so on and so forth. Considering all P7100, VE, VP44, CP3, A3000, P3000, and any variation of those fuel differently because their original application vary so greatly it is redundant to label an injector as HP over stock rating. This is where the original HP rating for injectors is dependant upon original application and fueling needs for that application of that specific engine.

Injector Chart

stock 2nd gen inj - vary depending on model but all are 145° injectors

49 state 160 hp - 5x9 .000318

49 state 175 hp 5x9 .000318

180 hp 5x9.5 .000354

160 hp cpl 1863, (actually a 180) 5x9.5 .000354

all calif trucks '96-98 were 180 hp = 5x9.5 .000354

215 hp - 5x10.25 .01025 .000412

300's and 330's same size - 4x12 = .000452

370's - 5x12 = .000565 155° spray pattern

435's - 5x014 = .000769 avail in both 155 and 145° spray pattern

ddp stg III (90 hp) = 50 LPM (liter per minute) 155° 5 hole extrude hone inj <5x12 270 bar

ddp stg IV (140 hp) = 66 lpm - 5 holes smaller than .0135 270 bar

ddp stg 4plus - no longer avail now considered comp waiver must be signed to obtain

ddp comp = 73-90 lpm depending on application same for pop

all four start out as 155° marine nozzles and are extrude honed

the flow numbers (lpm) i posted is what was printed on boxes that i received from ddp

there are posts on other forums that vary slightly with these numbers

measured the holes myself (.0135 gage would not go in a stg 4 ect)

have not used 50 or 75 hp ddp inj - have no idea what size the holes are

custom injectors -

5x.012 = .000565

5x13 = .000663

5x14 = .000769

7x10 = .000549 (24v conv inj are usually 7 hole)

7x12 = .000794

6x13 = .000795

5x15 = .000882

6x14 = .000923

5x16 = .001005

6x15 = .001059

7x14 = .001077

5x17 = .001134

6x16 = .001206

5x18 = .001272

6x17 = .001360

5x19 = .001416

6x18 = .001526

5x20 = .001570

ind inj super dragon flows (10 hole) - 5x10.25 + 5x18 .001684

6x20 = .001884

5x22 = .001900

5x24 = .002261

6x22 = .002280

5x25 = .002459 (this is what some refer to as a true competition injector)

*i figured out the csa (cross sectional area) for ea injector. those numbers are in bold

if you want to figure 24v stuff or something that is not on the chart use rē x pi x # of holes

take the hole size divided by 2 times pi (3.14259) times the number of holes

Here is some good info. Cant remember where I got it though

Just to clear things up, because i think my reply was taken wrong. I meant no disrespect to you guys at LBDP and I know you guys know way more than I about injectors. I was trying to clear up to others that dont know that 140hp injectors for example dont add 140hp. Again sorry for any confusion. Also I assisted in the install of a set of your 5x.012's in a first gen and run excellent and smoothed things out a bunch.

No offense taken, I'm just an Azzhole(know it and can't change it) and and that subject tends to be an irritant because majority of people think that the HP quoted on the box is 100% and it always adds it, and don't know any better as majority of companies don't want to educate the consumer. In our view an educated consumer is a happy consumer that can do more good than harm.

You must have helped Stefan? Glad he found his fuel filter issue and he is enjoying the injectors and his truck.

Only the first part of my post was towards you the other was my attempt at educating. As you can tell I'm not a teacher for obvious reasons :w2:

Bulldog could you have left the DDP info out??? :argh: LPM now thats some funny shat lol and I did notice you allocated that info elsewhere so don't take this part completely seriously as its not directed at you.

Its from a thread over on CumminsForum, have it favorited.

BRE 04-15-2011 05:18 AM

Alright well good thing you got my drift. Yea I helped Stefan, we are still lining stuff out though. It also irritates me when people go by horsepower ratings which is why i was quick to jump on that but should have explained myself more thouroughly.

I second the leaving out of DDP stuff... lol

1SlowCTD 04-15-2011 10:35 AM

What else is wrong with Stefan's truck???

BRE 04-15-2011 05:37 PM

lol Well between fuel filter issues from the retards that had it before him and just getting things lined out. If its not his its mine. And as of now its mines turn.
