Would you burn fuel from the early 80's?

I'm in the process of moving an old farm house onto my acreage, and in the basement of the house is a steel tank half full of diesel that the previous owner of the house figures is from the early 80's before they switched to natural gas.

the fuel looks good but I was just curious if diesel goes bad?

if its in your 12valve burn it.

The ol' 12V will probably handle it fine, newer engines not so much. Some additive to spruce it up would help.

take sample in clear jar and look for contaminents and then smell, if it smells realy bad dont use. i would mix it with new diesel.

Thats what I was thinkin I would filter it and mix 50/50 with fresh fuel :c:

That's fuel oil. Been told it's nearly the same as diesel fuel but not sure if they are interchangable. It's also likely dyed. BIG fine if you get caught running it on the road. Diesel and fuel oil can attract moisture (condensation) to the point it will actually grow algie over time. If you still want to run it, I'd filter the entire batch first.

Just found this after a quick Google session:

Home Heating Oil is closest to Number 2 Diesel Fuel in ignition quality and lubricating ability. But before anybody rushes to put this non-road taxed fuel in their truck, consider this: refiners don't intend Home Heating Oil to be used in an internal combustion engine and the furnace fuel that is sitting in your basement tank may or may not have the smoke suppressants, ignition accelerators and biocides to kill fungi and bacteria that we generally assume to be present in the Diesel Fuel at the pump.

Thanks guys, i would be running it in my 12v. I guess I'll check it out real good and possibly filter it before I use it.:tu::c:
