Waste gate, shoulda thought about that

So im trading my 4.10s with pukie for his 3.55s for the gas mileage and to get my rpms down back into the power band. My truck wimps out on power until you get into overdrive so I was hoping that the load on the truck from the gears would actually give it power. However, as I read more, I think my waste gate is bad and the turbo is only putting more than 15 pounds in overdrive. I can't find the waste gate, I think the guy before me removed it. Can I get a picture or right engine side diagram? Should I go ahead with the gears anyways? I drive over 100 highway miles a day and 20 country miles

410s are great if you're towing if you're not and you're not in California where the speed limits suck a fat one then I'd do the 354s these engines get best mileage around 2100 rpm as far as a wastgate goes you need to know what Turbo you have and go from there

If your trucks fueling is stock, I doubt you'll see more than 15lbs if you have a 96 auto (180hp). My stock 96 5 speed (215hp) will see about 21-22lbs max.

I would recommend going with the 3.55's. If you want to keep your 4.10's, look into a 3k or 4k GSK kit, it will give you a lot more RPMs and better response. With stock governer springs, these trucks start defueling around 21-2200rpm, and defuel completely around 2800rpm. The GSK kit extends thats range greatly.

With story k springs they defuel completely at 2250 in overdrive in an auto and 2800 in every other gear

should I do the 4k kit even with the 3.55's or will i never get up into that range enough to matter? and the problem I'm fighting now is that the guy before me did a lot of stuff and then undid most of it when he sold it. so some is stock and some isn't and some is rigged enough that works. so when stuff goes wrong, i bomb it and everyone is happy.

Id go ahead and get the 4k, you most likely wont ever need to run to 4000rpm, but when you add in the 60lb valvesprings, it will give you the ability to safely run to 3500 or so if you wanted to. The only disadvantage is I believe the 4k will be a little more touchy than the 3k, just depends on what you do with the truck.

Well, I think this weekend I'm going to pull the fuel plate out. adjust the AFC and see what that does. Pukie is gonna send me his gears and I'll send him mine whenever he gets around to it. and then I'll order the 4K from True Performance Diesel after I see what kinda power I'm at. it's the stock HX35 turbo btw.

It really bothers me that I can only get more than 10 pounds of boost when it shifts into overdrive. Any ideas? If I go slow and roll into overdrive when it shifts, it will work really well. however it won't stay long. only a couple seconds and then it's back into 4th gear and the pressure stays below 8 psi

I would almost think it was a fuel issue and not a wastegate issue. If you're not gettin enough fuel, it wont be making much boost. When was the last time you changed your fuel filter/cleaned out your prefilter? I would try that also.

check for boost leaks

Dieselfunohio 03-25-2011 11:57 AM

I do need to check for boost leaks but I don't have the tools. I changed all filters and fluids 2 weeks ago. and I can get over 20 pounds but only in 1 gear. The turbo spools up nice and quick though and the truck is responsive to boost, but in overdrive the petal gets a little firmer, the RPM's drop, and everything gets plenty of power. until you hit 2200 RPM and then bleh.
