Taking forever to start !!

1996 2wd 12v is having hard time starting it cranks and cranks and cranks then finally starts I haven't timed it but I'd say a good 15 to 20 sec of cranking it will finally start and run decent then it runs great. It used to be I'd let it sit for acouple days then this would happen but now it's every time I start it ... Please help ! :argh:

:tu: Check for air in fuel or the fuel is leaking at a fuel line.:w2:

mysterync 02-26-2011 09:29 PM

Probably a bad fuel heater.

CumminsPower97 02-27-2011 08:01 PM

i dont no if ur ford isthe same as my dodge but my truck was doin that same thing didnt start out bad but slowly got worse at startin all it would do is crank and crank...on my truck it was the fuel shutoff sylenoid...and if urs is the same on the bottom of the sylenoid there is a lil lever turn ur key to the on position and pull that lever up..the lever will then stay up get back in ur truck and turn the key...mine starts evey time like that..hope this helps

mikeproeder 02-27-2011 10:21 PM

Excllent thanks I'll try it tomorrow where is it located ?

CumminsPower97 03-01-2011 08:15 PM

mine is on the left side of the motor bout half way down...if ur standin next to the left frond tire it will b bout half way down right in front of you...but thats on a dodge not sure bout urs...if u have a repain manual it will b called ur.. fuel shutoff sylenoid

bwfarrier513 03-01-2011 09:51 PM

there is also a return pressure regulator ( fancy words for a banjo bolt with a ball and spring in it) that is located on the p pump, its the banjo bolt that comes out and attaches the fuel line to the pump, a quick fix is to pull it apart and stretch the spring a little but i wouldnt recommend doing that unless ur stuck some where. diesel injection services had them for 96 bucks the last time i got one. but i would check for leaks before you spend any cash. or do like i did and just say the hell with it all cause it was all orig. with 190k and replace the lift pump banjo bolts, seals fuel lines delete the pre heater and as soon as it was all primed its fired up first crank no matter the temp. some times its worth just going through the whole system thats acting up and eliminate future problems and keep the old stuff for spares.

CumminsPower97 03-02-2011 07:21 PM

and by doin all this you said my truck should start up everytime?? or would it just b cheaper for me to buy my $150.00 fuel shutoff sylenoid and b done with it cause i no that is y mine doesnt start without my havin to pop the hood every time...

mysterync 03-02-2011 07:47 PM

There is more than one reason a truck won't start well and had you paid attentions you would have learned that you and the o/p don't have the same problem. HE is slow to start usually caused by loss of prime in your case your just not starting. Had you thought about reading the post or figuring some folks on this thread had some technical experience you wouldn't have posted this. You need to diagnose your fuel shutoff and if its the problem replace it. It will NOT cause slow or hard starts unless there is a voltage issue. These are not the same problems the op has!

just to clear things up are we talkin about your ford or do you have a dodge too?

mysterync 03-02-2011 07:51 PM

Is anyone actually reading the post at the top of the page?

heavy hauler 03-02-2011 08:53 PM

Dont think they are. His sig list a ford but his problem is with a dodge.

If you give the truck a little bit of fuel does the truck crank then or does it continue to spin over for a few seconds.

bwfarrier513 03-04-2011 05:01 PM

as far as i know if your fuel shut off goes bad it wont start at all unless you pop the hood. you are loosing prime if it is cranking over like normal and then starts but if its slower cranking than normal you have electrical issues. my philosophy is if one part of the fuel system is starting to fail or a part of any system is starting to fail replace it all to keep from being on the side of the road. tow bills are more expensive than replacing everything once and knowing its all good. reliability is key and if you are starting to have problems with one thing the rest will follow so nip it in the bud.

my fuel shut off was acting exactly like this a while back... i just took it off and left it in the ON position... until i can afford a new one :w2:

i just shut down my truck by putting it in 3rd and letting off the clutch :tu:

thats what i meant. everybody seemed to overlook that part

justin c 03-06-2011 04:02 PM

what kinda fuel pressure do u have when its running?

mikeproeder 03-06-2011 10:48 PM

not sure yet thanks everyone i havent had time to work on it yet im going to start looking at it next week thanks for all your input ill let you know how it goes and yes i have a ford but im working on my 1997 dodge 2500 cummins

mikeproeder 03-09-2011 04:17 PM

Alright got to look at the truck todayi played with the solinoid for turning the fuel on I don't k ow what the name of it is I would like to k ow that and so I played with it and turned the key and started right up ! My guess is I needs a new one of those. Also the transmission is searging in overdrive I heard there is a fairly simple fix to that how is that done thanks so much !!

prison 03-09-2011 05:06 PM

i believe what your referring to is the fuel shut off solenoid. which is a fairly common thing. as for surging in od hmm there was just a post that referred to this problem. i'll look for it now

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

is it an nv4500?

I've got the same prob. But I know whats wrong with mine, the good ol ve is leaking so I put roofing silicone around it and it cranked everytime with out wait for about a year or so now it's back to leaking... looks like a rebuild kit coming soon for me!

You should replace the fuel shutoff solenoid relay first its only like $20 and it fixed my problem, but you might have to get a solenoid. But i would start with the cheapest thing first. Unless your good with electrical and can troubleshoot it all with a multimeter and find out whats bad :c: goodluck!

prison 03-09-2011 09:14 PM

couldn't he use a test light for this diagnosis? would take 2 people but would be the way to do it without guessing

mikeproeder 03-10-2011 09:48 AM

Alright I replaced it but it still does it I don't know why it worked last time o well but I was thinking maybe it's sucking air I rolled under and the fuel lines have fuel on them my best guess is ther is a leak somewhere has anyone had this happen ?

mysterync 03-10-2011 01:52 PM

Put a couple pounds of air in the tank and look for leaks. Probably bad fuel heater
