anybody running a np205 with nv4500?
I am not happy with the 241 in my truck and quite frankly im waiting for it togrenade on me. i ve been thinkin about going to the tried and true 205 but ive heard some conflicting arguements. Id like to hear what stories guys have that have done this swap. Thanks everyone!

What is wrong with your 241?

Ever since i bought the truck it has slipped and pops out of gear. when i pull with it i put a ratchet stap on it and it holds in low range. I had it apart and found a broken snap ring and fixed that. couldn't find anything else wrong with it so i re assembled it and still have the same problem. i was going to take it to a trans shop but its a lot of money to get it rebuilt so ive been thinking about going to the 205 insted and be gear driven. Tryin to get the best bang for my buck. Its either that or a 271 swap but it will be a while before i can afford it

205's blow up behind modded cummins if you pull. If you're like my buddy that's just got an old farm truck that's stock and never goes to a truck pull, then that 205 will outlast the truck...
All depends on what you want to do... I personally would just fix up the 241 or find a good one in a boneyard... Probably cheaper that way then buying the adapters and a 205. |
241HD you won't break it.

Son's 90-96 eBay SuperGoat has a 4500/205 that I got as a unit from a rebuilder shop I found online
However, I can't currently tell you jack schitt about longevity, as the truck's still in the fab/custom shop for the final touches on A/C, and some other creature-comfort modifications |
I drive the truck daily and like to play on the weekends when its nice. The 4wd guys all swear that the 205 is bullet proof. i m not super extreme on the mods yet i havent been on a dyno but the dragstrip calculater says 400 hp. When i do pull its in the work stock or equivelent class. the old 205s also have a higher low range ratio which should work nice on the pulling track with the stick. Im not sue which way to go here. its about the same cost wise to do the swap or go to a 241 dhd

Thats what im afraid of. I plan on running my stocker til it blows but id like to start putting parts together for when that happens, and i was hearing that the gear driven case was a good swap for the money. i cant afford a 271 rite now

if you happen to have your 241 apart again, take a second look at the low range gear set. ive seen them develop an angular wear pattern that is very hard to see but it will nock the t-case out of low. a new planetary and sun gear should fix you up. and as far as the theory of the 205 blowing up, u r high, good luck blowing up a case iron case that has stood the test of time, good luck trying to get the gear drives to split cause they have tapered roller bearings. it cant be beat.

Thanks for the info on the 241. I was thinking the same thing about the 205. i pull with first gen truks with 205s and havent seen one of them blow yet. I found one for 50 bucks im getting it this weekend and starting the swap f it. ill keep the 241 as a spare.

good idea on the np205 swap.. their tough as nails and very hard to hurt.. just make sure you upgrade to the 32 spline outputs for the front and rear..other than that it aint breakin
