Death wobble

just bought a 96 Ram about 4 months ago has about 325k on it with about 65k on the new motor. coming home from school hit a pothole and the whole front end started to wobble like a mofo:scare2:. uncle thinks its the dodge death wobble and i dont doubt him but i was just wondering what the easiest way to fix it is.

get your self a steering stabilizer, fixes the problem

tiremann9669 01-12-2011 06:17 PM

Also replace worn track bar and other components :c:

x2 on the track bar. I got the steering box brace first and that made the death wobble worse, so do the tracking bar first.

the brace for the 2nd gen trucks are a joke and waste of money replace the track bar with one withought a ball joint the dt profab is the bets on the market comes with everything needed even the bracket works great for street and off road use especially with a lift

Anything in the steering/suspension up front can cause or add to the wobble.

Also have this death wobble.. I have dual steering stabilizers and the top ones bushing is gone. Could that be a big part of the problem??

i would recomend replacing all the front components. if it is already wobbling then it means that more than one part is worn. if you just replace one then the other worn ones are gonna wear out the new parts. replace them all and they will last alot longer

gunneruponone 01-19-2011 07:01 AM

get your front wheels jacked up off the ground and move your tires by hand as is the they are trying to turn left to right and watch for play in all steering components.also move from top to bottom rock back and forth to check ball joints.

Check the thread listed in my signature. It is updated with all the known causes for this that we have found to date.

My replacement dual stabilizers came in today. Got those installed and took it for a test drive. Went down a street made of potholes. It did better.... THEN it hit me. Like a horse on its hind legs kicking in rampage, starts bouncing up and down side to side. I jerk the steering wheel to regain tension and it stops. Attemped the highway and it bounced when i hit a pothole at about 45MPH. above that once it droppedd into 4th gear it just floated above them. My track bar bushings are shot, and sway bar links look a little week. Could a steering stabilizer bar be a problem as well?

skeet615 01-21-2011 07:39 PM

I was haveing the same problem i rebuit it like 4 times but i did the new style converson kit on mine wit the new style track bar that has bushings instead of ball joints over a year ago and i havent had any problems since

Also check the tires for belt shift, wheel bearing play,& all components, steering box steering shaft,it has u-joints in it. Have someone move the wheel back& fourth& look at every moving part in the assembly,I've 3 Rams, they are capable of all the above in the steering play dept.

deerefanatic 01-28-2011 08:21 PM

Anyone have an opinion on the lukeslinks for fixing the trackbar vs replacing it? I have a little death wobble and thought if that'd fix it, it'd be worth doing before towing season this year...
