nv4500 guru needed
 
completing a conversion and have a couple questions

my new trans is from a 99 as far as I have been able to find out I need a tail housing from 96 or earlier to get speedometer function

what fluid?
the mopar or gm is $22 the castrol syntorque is not available and is also expensive

I am looking for an alternative that will not break the bank and is somewhat available ie... I do not want to have to order it online or try to find an amsoil dealer

I plan to change the fluid every 20,000 as I have done in the past ... previously I have used schaeffer and the rp with good results but they are gl5 not the required gl4 and they are expensive

I think all the casings are the same on the NV 4500 except for the tail shaft so that should work. As far as the type of oil any synthetic 75w-90 gear oil is compatible with the syncros. Standard gear oil would work if it wasn't for the syncros but regular gear oil will eat them up.

I do not understand what you are saying

gm and mopar both call for a gl4 because of the syncros

All available gear oils I can find are rated gl5 which can do damage theoretically

I have not been able to find a gl4 fluid in 75/90 or 80/90 other than factory and some say amsoil has a product

Amsoil or Mopar are your best bets. There are no cheap fluids for the 4500. Is this a 2wd or a 4wd? I know the 4wds derive the speed off the transfer case not the transmission. Other wise the speedo would read way high in 4lo.

Castrol Syntorque or Amsoil MTG are the only acceptable fluids for a NV-4500HD:

AMSOIL - Synthetic Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 (MTG)

truck is 2wd and from what I have found out it drives off of the tail housing I am just trying to confirm that and make sure I have what I need

Does anybody know how much the amsoil product is?

I went to my local Dodge dealership last time I had my 4500 rebuilt. They gave me Mopar synthetic manual transmission lubricant. SAE 75W-85. Less than 2 years later it will not go into 3rd gear. The shifter goes down but will not grab. May have to try another oil. I'm also want to add some power to my motor. Nothing crazy for now, but may go crazy later. Is there any kind of heavy duty parts I would need to put in there so it will hold up?

the wrong fluid eats the the synchros on nv4500s in a hurry. you absolutely have to use the correct fluid. it has to be a gl4, not gl5 gear oil. gl5 has to much zinc, its a great high pressure anti wear additive but too much eats the sychros on the nv4500s, the material the synchros are made from on the nv4500 is different then most manual transmissions. amsoil sells the proper fluid for about 13 bucks a quart. according Chevy the fluid is supposed to be good for the life of the transmission, they recommends never changing it if i recall correctly. i dont know what dodge says but its the same trans aside from reverse not being synchronized. i havnt changed the fluid on the dodge, i just checked the level and smelled it to make sure nobody put the wrong stuff in, the proper fluid will have a smell of its own, you can tell what regular gear oil smells like. i used the amzoil stuff in the chevy and she shifts smooth as butter, im gonna need to check the dodge again because it shifts pretty rough, somebody may have put the wrong stuff in and i didn't catch it.

Thanks. Any suggestions on what kind of parts that I should put in to handel extra horse power. I know about the 1 3/8 main shaft. The truck is stock. Thanks again
