engine rebuild
 

so since my truck was wrecked and had some extra money i decided to pull my motor and go thru it, i got the head off last night and notice if im looking down at the tops of the pistons i can see the first piston ring, the tops of my pistons have quite a bit of room between the side of the piston and cylinder walls, i havent been this far into one of these motors yet and dont know too much about specifics on these things, there is also i noticable lip in the cylinder wall where the ring stops coming up

if my pistons are fired, whats the next step from here? do i need to take it to a shop and get it check to see if i can clean the walls up and go with a bigger piston or could i possibly just clean the walls up and put stock pistons back in with over sized rings? i have a buddy who knows what he is doing with these motors coming over later but just looking for some more input

its not so much a lip as its a bump/hump about 1/2-1" down from the top off the block and it looks to me its right about where that first piston ring would stop, i had alot of blow by on my motor and notice it was losing more oil than it was leaking a little more than a gallon every 1500-2000 miles, its wired because i still got great fuel mileage and felt to me like it had good power, i got about 600 highway miles to a tank about 2 months ago

is it in all the cylinders?

ya i have rebuilt a 2 stroke 250r and 200ex, but thats a little different, i have had heads off before and done everything eles to a motor just about while i work at a local diesel shop, one of my friends from the shop is going to help me out with what im hazy on

ya i think its all the cylinders, i cant roll the motor over to get two of them down in the cylinders more because of the way i put it on the stand

theres usually a curve in cylinders towards the bottom. do you know how to use a snap gauge and micrometer? if not have him help you with the measuring. if he doesn't know how then don't attempt it. you need factory specifications for what your cylinders are supposed to be. make sure you have an engine manual of some sort to give you all these specifications. the diesel shop should have one.

i will go down there on monday and get all the specs and im going to talk to that guy and set up a time for him to come over

mine has the same thing on cylinders 2,3,&4. its only on the one side too. its definatly not carbon build up either. im going to take it to a machine shop and have them look at it. i just got my manual with all the specs so im going to check it out more tomorrow. let me know what happens with yours.

we detemined that the cylinders are bad and i either need to bore them out and get new pistons or find a good used block some where and put new rings on my old pistons, it doesnt look cheap either way, i already bought just about every seal i need, anyone want to buy them off me so i can buy the entire rebuild kit with pistons?
