In Tank Pump????

:humm: I am wondering if my 1996 dodge 2500 5.9 has an in tank fuel pump, I noticed a loss of power only on hills. There is a fuel pump relay in fuse box under the hood. One dealer says yes, another says no. Now I am confused. Fuel pressure checks out, another thing if really standing on it. I get a sound of spark knock.Truck runs fine in normal every day driving it just seems like it is not getting enough fuel. Thanks

To see if you have an in tank pump, bump the starter and not start the truck, listen for the pump running. The lift pump should run for about 20 seconds after you bump the starter. Also, make sure that the hood is up to see if it is near the fuel filter housing.

There has never been an intank pump on a 96. And its unlikely an intank pump was even put in on a 96. Run away from that dealer that says that.

You may need new fuel lines and are letting air in somewhere. Another thing to look at i the Overflow valve on the P-7100

Hey, Thanks for the reply. Truck is bone stock daily driver, 233,000 miles. I have replaced fuel filters, cleaned lift pump screen, sluggish on hills goes like a cut cat on open road. just seems like it is not getting fuel volume. I have been a sbc enthusiast and gasoline engine mechanic for many years. Diesel is a different animal to me.

wouldn't be at around 2,500 RPM's would it?

Governor Springs defuels at around there. Don't know the exact number, but I'm sure others here do...

Have you checked the shut off solenoid to make sure its lifting all the way when running?

sounds like a weak lift pump whats your fuel pressure

Dr. Evil 12-08-2010 10:09 PM

Jeff, as already mentioned, you may want to check the fuel pressure. You have to tap the banjo bolt on the injector pump inlet and install a guage and a needle valve of pressure snubber.

Also, if you have not replaced your overflow valve on your pump you might want to look at doing that.

Fuel pressure at idle is 20 ps.i I am going to install a gauge that I can see while driving. Say if driving down road at 60-65 step down on it hard to pass car shifts out of over drive sluggish for a few seconds, then picks up strong pulls hard, then get that spark knock sound, like pinging almost. Thanks for the replies.
